Teacher facing sex charges set to go to court

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A 42-year-old Shelby County teacher will go before a judge at the end of the month on charges she had sexual encounters with two students.

Shannon Hirchert is a special needs teacher at Martha Layne Collins High School. She is charged with six counts of sexual abuse and two counts of distribution of obscene material to a minor.

Police say Hirchert was involved with two boys who are both under the age of 18. Authorities said the said the encounters happened between September 2010 and December 2010, with some of them taking place at the school.

The boys were not in Hirchert's class.
