View Full Version : It might be time to get rid of the mustang...

Yep, it's almost time. I've had the 5.0 for about a year and about 11200 miles on it.

Since I now have a gas guzzling hot rod in the garage, I suppose it couldn't hurt to seek out a new DD. I can't use the Mustang to take my dogs anywhere, so I was thinking something along the lines of the ford flex. I don't need a pick up, 4X4, or anything with tons of power.

I also don't want an econo-box piece of shit or something that costs more than $30K. I do like all the features that comes with with the Ford Sync, though. GM probably hasn't gotten any better and I don't trust any government products anyway.

And warranty... I gotta have the warranty because I'm too lazy to fix anything these days and hell, it's not like I'm setting out to buy a POS with the knowledge it needs work Where's Red-85-Z51?)

I'm really digging the Ford Flex right now even though a couple models are a bit over the $30K mark. What says you all?

Forgot to add, After the two year hell with that POS Nitro I bought my wife, I refuse to buy anymore dodge products at this point.

My wifes daughter just got a used nitro... She better not be calling here asking for money to fix it.

I said jeep cuz I want one but they are not really practical for hauling horses or even dogs the size of horses.

Ever thought of building a horse trailer but a smaller version for your dog? It would be kinda cool.

Crit, John, lemme get this straight, you are contemplating taking on 400/month CAR payments with INsurance and ASSorted bullshit taxes and whatEVER the 'industry' can fork over on you.....

to save a few scratches on your 5.0 stang seats???

U SERIOUS???

hell, I hauls lumber and ASSorted shit in my VETTE you saw....

I sold my work van to my stepson, just to get it off the stupid high INsurance rates here in Florida....

same shit I had to tell my son in Kalifornica sure, sell his Jeep to buy some box he can't haul shit in....

to save NOTHING, but spend more....yeh, right....

ONE nice thing about the vette, being old/antique....it costs nothing to drive/insure/and screw the MPG I not so happy with....so I spend 80 bux/month in gasoline....so friggin' WHAT???
trade in the vette to pay that much or MORE for INSURANCE alone???

NOT!!!!!

With my shoulder and knees getting worse, shifting through the gears is getting much harder. Driving while on pain meds isn't safe. That Z06 I've always had my eye on looks like it's a gonner now :(

Munch, you tellyour wife's daughter not to even bring that POS around you. (pics of daughter?) That Nitro R/T we had was the biggest piece of shit just short of being called a Chrysler LeBaron. The tranny went out 4 times and I never once hauled a fatty, trailer, or anything. Each time it went to the shop all they said was the computer needed an update? This isn't counting the three times the AC went out, the NAV stopped working, etc...

Me: Really? How did it **** itself up three before times without being connected to anything else? And why is it the same fix you have to do? Isn't there something wrong with that computer that you need to replace?

Sales Hole: Sir, we'll do the update.

Me: Go ahead. I'll trade this piece of shit in the moment I get it back. (keep in mind I'm within earshot of new customers, too.... if only I had my handle with me back then :( )

I traded it a couple of weeks later for the Ford Exploder SportTrac and have had no issues at all.

Gene, my insurance is extremely low for all three cars and my bike. I already called insurance and the Ford Flex of any trim would reduce my Ins. I worked out the math with the bank and it looks like I'd have a lower payment and same term w/ lower interest rate with the pricing the way it is (worst case scenario). I also don't haul toomuch stuff, but when I do, I have my wife's truck so cargo space isn't an issue. Plus, my dogs are spoiled. Beadist, Liz, Kevin, and Chef can tell you about that. My big guy would kill me instantly with my handle if he found out he wasn't riding inside with the A/C.

Not sure I want to spend the extra $$$ for the eco-boost at this point. Hell, I'm still looking around right now and probably won't make a decision on whether I really want to trade in or not for a month or two.

Nitro was a POS. The stang is a great car, never had any problems with it, and it's always been reliable, but it's getting difficult to drive.

Not one single problem with the Stang in any way shape or form. The only problem i had when I bought it was a UAW sticker in the front windshield that was immediately removed.

The '11 and up 5.0's are pretty nice.... even if the auto 6spd is made in Canada and the manual 6 is made in China.

The Flex is shit on gas and to pour salt in the wound you have to use premium.

It's a lowered Expedition in terms of size. If you want something huge it's actually pretty decent on fuel.

Read the ninja, Expedition doesn't require premium, or at least recommend that you use it.

Also it's an 18.8 gallon fuel tank, you'd be filling up every 5th day.

The handling isn't as good as the C5, but it's get-up-and-go seems to be a bit better over the stock C5, IMO, with the 400+ hp Coyote 5.0 motor. It has almost the same HP# as the C6, but wouldn't hold it's own unless it was super charged. It will also never have the same tight handling as the C5 or C6 without tons of upgrades which would beg the question: Why not buy a C6?

The interior has ore features than the C6 as far as hands-free, the Microsoft Sync, etc... but the heads up display, selective ride control, keyless proximity entry/locking, memory settings for seats and other stuff based on key fob used, and one thing I really miss... the telescoping steering wheel make the C6 better IMO. Don't get me wrong, the new GTs are nice for the price range, but they are no Corvette and were never meant to be corvette killers.

It's no worse than my 5.0 is. I'm looking for interior space and utility at this point. I was offered $25K on the GT which is what I will owe in about two months. The flex I was looking at is in the same price range and is making it more enticing. Granted, it's not ballah-top of the line, but I'm not looking for all that stuff. I'll save up to add all the premium trim options to a new vette when the next generation comes out.

Hmmm.... the Ford X-plan pricing that I qualify for is making this Flex look better and better. It's invoice + a couple hundred $$$.

The SEL is listed at $36K at the dealership, but starts at $30K under this plan with the same options. I've still got some homework to do but this is looking more and more like a possibility in the next few weeks if the numbers work out correctly. the 0% financing sure is appealing, too.

I bought my Mustang and Sport Trac from the same salesman at Automax Ford here in Killeen and was absolutely surprised when he told me about this X-plan pricing. I'm wondering if he loses any money on commission if I were to buy under this pricing plan?

Here's where I started with the info:
