BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Authorities say a copper thief has been transported to a hospital in Georgia after getting shocked by 7,000 volts at a College Park substation, causing power outages for some 3,300 Berkeley Electric Cooperative customers Tuesday morning.

According to company officials, someone broke into their substation just before 4 a.m. Tuesday and stole copper from the equipment.

Spokesman Micah Ponce said Tuesday that the suspect first tried to cut copper off a utility pole and knocked power out to homes on that side of street. Then, the suspect cut barbed wire on the back of the entrance to the substation and attempted to steal copper, failed to do so and fled.

Ponce also said the suspect tried to steal about $1000 worth of copper and damaged a transformer. Ponce says the suspect caused substantial damage to the transformer and it will have to be replaced. Investigators with the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office said the suspect was shocked during the attempted robbery.

"No amount of money is worth risking your life, it is extremely dangerous inside the substations," Ponce said.

According to Dan Moon of the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office, the suspect was taken to Trident Medical Center with serious injuries and then flown to a burn unit at an Augusta hospital.

Moon also said that the suspect was found at his mother's home.

Crews were able to restore the power before 5 a.m. The Berkeley County Sheriff's Office is investigating.

Our portable building office was heavily damaged during Hurricane Ike. So, we finally get around to trying to effect repairs, and guess what? Someone had stolen our wire run from the meter to the office. GRrr.

I'm glad this guy got hurt. Too bad he just didn't die. They should have slow coded him. F'n thieves.

:hurray:

Edit: This guy should get charged with terrorism, having hit an electrical substation, with the penalties to match. Waterboard his ass at Guantanamo.

So, he was shocked with 7,000 volts was well enough to flee to his Mothers house prior to needing medical assistance? Something doesn't smell right. Wouldn't 7k volts render you unconscious on the spot?

It's not the volts that do the damage, it's the Amps.

Offhand it would seem that a shock of 10,000 volts would be more deadly than 100 volts. But this is not so! Individuals have been electrocuted by appliances using ordinary house currents of 110 volts and by electrical apparatus in industry using as little as 42 volts direct current. The real measure of shock's intensity lies in the amount of current (amperes) forced though the body, and not the voltage.

Mine moved a bit.

The SOB survived the jolt, now we will have to pay for his repairs and possibly the money paid to him by the negligence of the power company that did not secure its property enough to keep this asshole out. Him and his shyster lawyer will get a bit of money out of this.
