I am working from home today installing SQL Server 2008 on a server. We had one crash Thursday night and tried all day yesterday to get it back up. So as a fall back I started building another box just in case the hardware folks could not get it up. Well they replaced the motherboard but apparently the array controller (which was on the MB) scrambled the disks. So it is going to take a full rebuild to get it back up.
After I finished getting the spare server up last night I got the backup guys to restore all the data to the box I built.
Now I have to reinstall SQL Server and turn it over to the SQL folks to try and get back up.
This is one of the major things that piss me off about my company. Two years ago I starting pushing for new hardware, well business was bad and the recession was squeezing us, so they said wait until things get better.
Well things are a whole lot better right now, we are sold out for the next 18 months and running as hard as we can, making money hand over fist.
About a year ago I hit them up again for money for new hardware, they said,"wait until mid-2011."
Well it's past mid 2011 and a couple weeks ago I went back, hat in hand and requested money. They told me, "go back and rework your DMF proposal and present it to staff in October. If we decide to go forward we'll put it in the 2012 plan."
Well the 8 to 10 year-old hardware is starting to crash now, this the second major failure in 3 weeks, and I had my ass ate out by 5 different managers because their people couldn't get to critical data. I don't get paid enough for this shit. :leaving:

i need to put some spray foam (great stuff) in cracks and crevices in the garage, install 2 sets of mini blinds, and install a ceiling fan in my shop office...does that sound like work? i'm not getting any $$ for this 'work', but it needs to get done.

Tell them the truth. Say "This is a hardware issue. I've told you guys multiple times that we need to upgrade. If you continue to ignore the issue, it's only going to get worse."

and no, I'm not working today.

You sure? I get all the "fun" jobs.

This one was real fun. Two bores in line 22" apart and a SERIOUS out of balance condition. See those steel bars bolted to the faceplate? 120 lbs of steel bolted to the faceplate just so I could spin the part at 100 rpm.

They weldment pictured in my previous thread, the big boss came out and told me straight out, "We weren't sure exactly how to machine this but knew you'd figure it out"

Went to work last night and found out we would be short staffed after 3am. Of course, the fun began after 3:15am and I never sat down until it was time to get in the car to leave. :banghead:

what do you do for work?

Uncle Pervey
07-30-2011, 10:22pm
Well it is 10:20 PM and I am still working, trying to get SQL Server to install on a box that is totally unsuited for it, over the WAN. through a frigging VPN, off a DVD mounted remotely.
It nearly got finished about 15 minutes ago then the VPN croaked and disconnected all my shit. :beat:
So I get to start all over again. This time I am copying the distribution directly to the box and installing from there. :leaving:

I work about 10-14 hours a day during the week and work from home on Saturday and Sunday most weekends for at least 6-10 hours. Today I was at the client site at 5:30 a.m., left at noon and have about 5 hours of work left to do from home. I love my job, tho', just not the demands. I'm getting too old for this shit.

what do you do for work?

Maintenance at a local factory. We do everything from infrastructure to the machinery, that's anywhere from 60+ years old to new CNC.
