The deceased is a friend of mines son. What a fuked up day thus far. :sadangel:

I am not an anti-gun person. Not even a little. But what is the solution to a tragedy like this? IS there a solution?

Ben was a GOOD kid. His father is one of the hardest working, honest guys I know. We went through our apprentiship together 28 years ago.

The solution is to never point a gun at someone unless you're willing for them to be dead.

How very, very sad for your friend to lose his son. :(

Sorry for the loss. The friend is a blatant damn idiot though. He should sit in jail for a good long time so he can think about how f'n stupid he is. "Thinking it was unloaded, pointing at head and pulling trigger". Real stroke of genius. If I'm going to handle a gun, I make sure it's clear first. Wow, glad the perp is no friend of mine. Sorry for the rant, but stupidity of that caliber sends me over the edge.:sadangel:

As a lifelong gun person (45 year NRA life member and 25 year NRA firearms instructor and long time range officer) I guess it’s fair to say there is no cure for being stupid.

Doing something that crazy violates common sense and the rules of good safe gun handling. Shit like that gives the anti gun people ammunition to use against us. One asshole like that nullifies the many years of good /safe/ sane gun handling that 99 & 44/100% of us practice.:banghead:

:iagree: Like my dad taught me when I was 12. "Son, never, ever point a gun at anything you don't intend to shoot."

He's the one in jail.

Another article states: Dahl told police “this was the first time he had ever handled a gun, and he did not know about guns,” the complaint said. “He said that all three of them had earlier been pointing the empty guns at each other, just playing around.”

What a waste.

People need to learn to treat small arms with respect.

:yesnod:This. Loaded, unloaded, doesn't matter. First rule of firearm safety. Other than that, the first thing you should do when you pick up a firearm is clear it. Doesn't matter if your "buddy" just did it right in front of you. It's YOUR responsibility to make sure the gun is not loaded. These are two of the first things I was taught when I was a kid regarding firearms. It was driven into me with constant reminders, and i will never forget it. Shame this kid wasn't taught the same.

Some 15 years ago, the one son of my exhaust system man, Ricky was killed that way....same shit....almost identical.....

it happened just a few months before I met him when moving here.....

it's a mess all right,

and I can't help but note the appearance of that kid in the mug shot....

he got that 'look' that I see on almost all mug shots for serious shit, like there is nothing home, in the head....I can't put my finger on it, other than to say 'the look'.....

I picked up on that decades ago with the mugshot of a old friend from HS, and he started up his crime sprees, ending with being a mass murderer over many years....including double decapitation murders.....
in Canada....

And therein lies the problem. They were never taught to respect guns. What a sad tragedy. :sadangel:

I don't know who owned the gun.

Another article says they were pointing guns at each other. What is confusing is, Ben's father Roy, (My friend) is an avid hunter. His kid KNOWS gun safety. To read he was pointing a gun at someone makes ZERO sense to his friends.

Too soon to ask my buddy the particulars. He put his 22 year old only son in the ground this morning.

According to one of the articles, Dahl first lied and said Benjamin shot himself while cleaning the gun. I'd guess that anything else he says is suspect, too.

Again, how very heartbreaking for your friend to lose his son, especially in such a senseless, casual way. :sadangel:

I suspect this to be the case. To hear Ben was pointing a gun at someone? Just no way.

This Dahl kid is full of shit and trying to deflect some of this I think.

Hate to say this, but the victim should have known better than to be in the same room with idiots that aren't trained in gun safety's first rule.
Never point a gun at anything you don't want to kill! Waste of a good kid.:sadangel:

Exact same thing happened here about three months ago. Four guys were looking at guns belonging to one of therms' parents. A 20 year old picked up a weapon and racked the slide, apparently without checking the mag first. He had his finger on the trigger, and when the rack locked forward the weapon discharged, striking a 19 year old in the chest. He died before EMT's could arrive. He attempted to persuade the other two to say the youth committed suicide, but the wouldn't agree to the plan and told police what happened. I don't remember what they charged him with (manslaughter, reckless homicide?) and he hasn't been to trial yet.
Education is the key. If you don't know how it works, leave it alone. I've had weapons since the early 80's and am proud to say I've never had an accidental discharge. Safety first!

Terrible. Burying your own son because of a stupid accident. In the world of parenting, it just doesn't get any worse than this.

Either way, the whole thing sucks. Obviously I posted earlier, and my sentiments are the same. I basically want to say there should have been an adult around. My heart goes out to the family and friends. Guns are perfectly safe in the right hands. Otherwise, we know the results.:sadangel:
