Largest settlement against gun maker: gun control group - Yahoo! News (http://old.news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20110726/us_nm/us_guns_settlement)
My knee jerk reaction to this was "oh hell no". But then I realized that, apparently, the guy *stole* the gun from the plant and it sounds like there was some real negligence there in terms of securing the facility, etc.

The Brady Center said the largest settlement involving a firearms maker in the past was its half-million dollar settlement against a manufacturer on behalf of the families of several victims of the Washington, D.C. area snipers in 2004.
I didn't know there was a settlement in this case.

Yup. Set the slippery slope. I'm still not sure I like the settlement in the Kahr case (actually, I know I don't), but it's dramatically different from "we are suing Kahr because someone used a Kahr weapon". In this case, I think Kahr is rightly responsible for the weapon since it was stolen from their own facilities.

I agree and they will be painted with a broad brush because "a firearms manufacturer was negligent".
The media will eat this up with a spoon.

and the real person at fault - was the one that pulled the trigger.
Read the linked article; mentioned were:
"The announcement followed a shooting tragedy in Norway last week that left at least 76 people dead."
"The NRA did not have an immediate comment "
Reuters & Yahoo...

What the Bradyots and the Ban Guns folks don't seem to get is that as long as people have access to something that can be used as a weapon, an individual, concerned for his/her own safety, is at risk from the person who chooses to equip themselves with a weapon. This has been true since the first hominid brained another with a friggin' rock about 200,000 years ago (no apologies to the fundamentalists who think the earth began 6,700 years ago and Adam showed up in the first week  ).
The Norway tragedy (and the Oklahoma City tragedy in '95, courtesy of T. McVeigh aka OyVay) demonstrate is:
a: the police usually arrive after the fact
b: in the absence of a gun, a whole bunch of fertilizer can be used to blow up people
I believe we must take responsibility for our own safety and that of our neighbors.
Oh, and BTW, in the Otoe indian language, "Vegetarian" means "bad hunter".
