NDIANAPOLIS, IN - Indianapolis fire officials say two sisters cleaning out their elderly father's home found a box of radioactive rocks.
Fire Department spokeswoman Rita Burris says 56-year-old Anita Cohee and 58-year-old Diane Serban found the small box labeled "radioactive ore" while cleaning out the attic Saturday. The box also was labeled "Uranium Thorium/Detection Corporation North Hollywood California."
The Indianapolis Star reports nine plastic-wrapped rocks in layers of cotton were inside the box. Firefighters and hazardous materials officials got a small but positive reading for radiation. They packed the rocks in a drum and removed it from the house.
The Star says it will be turned over to health officials for disposal. The family was allowed back into the house. The sisters' 93-year-old father has moved into an assisted living center.
