About a year ago the preliminary results came out that stated it was probable that people who were of European, Asian or Austral-asian descent had Neanderthal genes in their family trees. This has now been confirmed as true.
Apparently as modern humans left Africa they met up with their Neanderthal cousins in the Middle-East and bumped uglies. So instead of killing all the Neanderthal's off it looks like they were absorbed into the human population. :D
