Woman Shoots at Dog, Accidentally Kills Husband in Mississippi

(NewsCore) - A family was grieving Monday after a Texas woman accidentally shot and killed her husband while trying to fend off a pit bull that threatened their grandchildren.

Betty Walker and Robert Walker Sr., of Houston, were visiting their son's Jackson, Miss., home Friday when a neighbor's eight-month-old pit bull named Cocaine jumped over the fence, The Clarion-Ledger reported.

Robert Walker Sr., a 53-year-old retired engineer, threw a brick at the dog while his wife rushed their grandchildren into the house. She returned outside with a .38-caliber revolver, finding her husband holding the barking puppy with both hands.

The grandmother fired two shots -- the first striking her husband in the upper right chest, the second hitting the dog's left front leg, the paper said.

Robert Walker Jr. heard the shots and ran outside. He reportedly found his mother screaming, "I shot your daddy! I shot your daddy!" The son then backed his pickup truck into the yard, lifting his father onto the tailgate while waiting for the police and an ambulance to arrive.

Walker was pronounced dead at a hospital around 5:00pm.

"It was a freak accident," his son said. "I don't know what else to say."

A spokeswoman for the Jackson Police told The Clarion-Ledger Saturday that the shooting was under investigation. It was not clear whether Betty Walker would face criminal charges.

The injured dog was taken in by animal control officers and its owner, Lazarius Montgomery, could also face charges. Montgomery claimed he was asleep when the incident occurred.

The Walkers were married for 32 years. They had four children together.

"My mom loved my dad," their son told the paper. "They traveled the world together."

"She said, 'Please forgive me. I killed your daddy.' We told her she was only trying to protect him."

Ok, maybe there were no drugs mentioned in the story, but someone did name the dog Cocaine.

Comical.

No it wasn't. It was someone who had no business handling a firearm doing just that. You have to be one incredible moron to try and shoot a dog being held down and accidentally hit your husband in the chest. Either that, or she thought it would be a good cover. :leaving:

OH, I can process it really easy, she wasn't trained in firearms, never shot shit in her life...almost bet on it,

he saves the kids, actually all he needed was a heavy weight, and the dawg is dead.....too bad,

lack of firearm knowledge is deadly in and of itself....

but like maybe 95% of the women in this country, hell NO is the attitude...

vs back in the early 70's I met this little TINY red head Scottish gal in DC at a party of some sort, we dated a few times...and so I handed her a .45 1911 full hardball auto....

you know that kid had a wrist as big around as maybe 3 of my fingers...

but she took hold and in spite of my urging, fired not ONE but TWO shots from the thing.....the last one was lofted so I had to take the gun from her.....from a land of NO guns to a 45 auto.....little kid had GUTS.....

This is why responsible gun owners merely show the handle.

Oh I think she has... most people who get into serious trouble with guns have just enough training to get themselves into serious trouble with a gun. Almost without exception, most women I have known who have had no training with guns have kept a wide berth from them. They don't even like to touch them, and when they do, they lift the butt with two fingers like it has the plague. If she ran outside and fired just like that, my bet is that she has shot lots of stuff... mostly cans, and rusty refrigerators, broken toilets, and such before this....

People who are unfamiliar with firearms and have not been trained have no real conception of what happens after the bullet leaves the barrel. They think if they are shooting at something they ought to hit it and the bullets won't go any further.
That's a lesson I learned at about 7 years of age when I was shooting at a cardboard box with 12 year old cousin's BB gun (without his knowledge) and hit my buddy squatting behind the box. I was shooting at the target and didn't realize that the BB would go through a whole cardboard box! The skin wasn't broken but he howled like a broke dick panther when that BB hit him in the leg!
I got my ass whipped so hard I could barely walk for 3 days after that, but I never touched a firearm of any kind until I was authorized after that! :yesnod:
