...every time I attempt to, it just doesn't turn out well.

:flush: :puke: :ack: :(

I don't think I will try anymore. I feel so sick...I hope these meds kick in so I can get some

Is there anything that you, try as you might, absolutely cannot eat without feeling ill?

Japanese food is pretty much my last choice for dinner. I only go if I'm with a big group, and that is where everyone else wants to go.

I always feel pressured when it's time for them to throw the shrimp at you and you're supposed to catch it in your mouth. :ohnoes:

I do get pretty excited though when it's time for the onion volcano! :o_o:

Same here. I don't like the way that they make everything taste the same. Chicken, steak, shrimp, rice, doesn't matter. All has that same questionable sauce.

I did eat at a decent one years ago in Vegas at the Hilton (Tailhook Scandal Hilton). Bennihanas or how ever you spell it. The food there was actually delicious.

A place adorned with stereotypical oriental furnishings from a U.S. point of view, which employees Male chefs of Asian lineage, who may or may not actually be Japanese, to cook your incredibly Americanized food (steak, chicken, shrimp, scallops, or lobster or any combination thereof w/ vegetables) with a hint of Asian influence i.e. rice and/or noodles and/or soy sauce.

It's quite delicious, and I'm not sure how anyone can't stomach going to one. It must be a miserable life not being able to eat steak or chicken or shrimp or scallops or lobster because they LITERALLY just sear them on the griddle w/ a little butter and/or oil.

The food is mediocre at best at all the places I've been to. You're paying for the little show before the meal with includes a lot of nothing more than banging the spatulas on the cooktop.

I don't want Ringling Bros. with my dinner, and there are much better places for steak, chicken and lobster. Like Blademaker said, I'll bypass the theatrics and head to a good sushi bar.

I don't do the Asian food thing.

I'm a meat & potatoes kinda guy...

usually meaning cheeseburger and fries.

and btw...I have had the REAL sushi...right on the boat...while the fish was still wiggling. I must admit, the meat did melt in your mouth...but I still prefer my fish grilled. :yesnod:

Too bad since it was a gift certificate Christmas present from some friends and Theresa and I had been looking forward to going.

The problem Will is while they are grilling that shrimp, scallops, chicken, lobster, and steak in butter, they are then hosing it down with their house sauce in a squeeze bottle. At most places this is a foul mixture of MSG and sodium in a solution that tastes vaguely of ginger but strongly of something that should simply not be on grilled meat. Everything gets hosed down with this, making the scallops taste exactly like the shrimp, which then tastes just like the steak. Close your eyes and good luck telling them apart.

You can ask them to leave the house sauce off but why bother? This is why the only time I go to a Japanese steak house is when we get invited out to eat for some reason or other, like it's somebody's birthday and that's what she wants to do.

Also they can't even seem to get their salad dressing to taste differently from their house sauce. So your salad also tastes just like your dinner. Every bite you eat has the same basic flavor profile.

Are you guys eating at Japanese places in your mid-west flyover towns? MO, KY, etc.? Maybe that's the problem. No competition = poor quality.

I've only ever eaten at them in Jacksonville, FL. There are a ton to choose from. My wife's (Asian) family has two specific ones that we always go to. The bad ones usually close pretty quickly.

What you described sounds pretty gross Cybercowboy, and uncharacteristic of what I'm used to.

We spent last week at the Sandals resort in the Bahamas and they've got one of these restaurants called Kimono's.

They actually used a different sauce for each meat. The chicken was teriyaki, the beef was peppercorn, the fish was a lemon butter and the shrimp was a combination of the lemon butter and peppercorn.

We ate there twice. Damn good both times.

Not necessarily so. While I can't speak for the entire Commonwealth, Louisville actually has some excellent Japanese steakhouses.

I only got sick after eating at one locally on one occasion. And that could've been from something I ate earlier.

Theresa's biggest complaint about Japanese steakhouses is her hair smells like the grill 24 hours or so after eating there. :D

Well, I said I did eat at one in Las Vegas, back in 1994, at the Tailhook Hilton that was actually good. Every other one I ate at, including such backwater cities as Chicago, Dallas, Washington DC, and Orlando, was just OK. And at every one the melange of ingredients melded into something that I find rather unappealing. Not that it's disgusting, just nothing at all like good Asian food tastes. I like bright, clean flavors in Asian food. I've had real Japanese food many times and the word subtle best describes the flavors. "Japanese" steakhouses are as similar to Japanese cuisine as McRibs are to real BBQ.

Sorry but the fact is that Japanese steakhouses were created with the American pallet, the bad one, in mind.

You'd be surprised how many good sushi places we have here in Joplin. Well, those that survived the tornado anyway. Also about twice a year me and a couple of friends order some sushi grade tuna, mackerel, salmon, whatever and make it here. It's surprisingly simple to make really good sashimi, rolls, etc. I like my rolls to be really spicy so I make them that way.

Now that I've recovered a bit...

The place I went to was more 'high end' (not one of those circus shows) and the food actually tasted good. I guess I just can't tolerate the ingredients. I remember going to one when I was a kid and being sick then, and then going again a few years ago with the same result.

No big deal, I just won't go back...plenty of other places to eat...

They do claim their grilled chicken breasts are 20% bigger now, though.

On the tangent tip, Me and Burger King don't get along, either. If I eat there, all I get's a world-class case of flame-broiled fluts.... :flush:

Ishi-Yaki is nice.

Japanese restaurants are hit and miss. If they don't have good udon, I typically won't return. They also need a good range of dishes, like Shabu Shabu, Sukiyaki, Katsu and Negimaki to keep my interest.

There are very few restaurants that do both great japanese kitchen and sushi. I have only found one in the DC area.

Restaurants that make me sick? I ate at Wafflehouse. Once.

Tachibana in McLean.

With Japan fishing still in turmoil, YMMV on the sushi. Haven't been there since the tsunami; the place I frequent in LA is doing no Japan-sourced species so the selection is pretty dismal there.

I spent some time in Alabama and Lower Alabama. Not being from there I figured they must be like a good version of Denny's; I stand corrected:D
