P-51(Big Beautiful Doll) and a Skyraider struck each other at the Duxford airshow today. The Skyraider was able to land with a chunk of missing wing. The Mustang pilot bailed out and is okay.

a group of guys fly them around here...out of the Destin airport

those are incredible machines close up...I was able to view them one day and w0w!

a couple of them did a cool fly over on the 4th with the red white & blue smoke streams...real cool when you are at an out door concert and the lady is singing the national anthem.

:(

What a beautiful plane that was.

David O'Maley, the owner of "Cincinnati Miss" is from my hometown.

He founded, and is now the Chairman of the Board for the Tri-State Warbird Museum, right up the road from my father's house. I never get tired of going to see them, or watching them fly overhead every so often.

Damn...there are only so many left. They are not quite as rare as some other WWII birds but nothing else captures peoples imagination like a P51

Two big thrills in my life were backseat rides in a P-38 and a P-51 when I was a kid. My uncle was a retired WWII pilot and was friends with a lot of the old war birders. Every time we had a air show locally my uncle got me all sorts of benefits that normal air show visitor never gets to see.
We got rides in B-25's (my uncle was a B-25 pilot in the Pacific) and a B-17. They were very cool, but the best was the Mustang. I was crammed up in the back on a jump seat (where the armor plate and radio was, on a WWII fighter.) It was hotter than hell and I nearly puked (I didn't) it was great. I don't remember the name of the P-51 or the pilot, but I do remember the P-38 pilot's name and the name of the plane. The pilot was Revis Sirmon and the plane was the "Scatterbrain Kid." About 10 years after my ride, the plane was lost in a crash, the pilot was not Mr. Sirmon but a friend of his. Mr. Sirmon died a couple of years ago at about 90 years old.

I had an uncle that flew P-38s in the Pacific during the war. He had some great stories about flying.

That mofo got a serious Rolls-Royce Merlin engine in 'em, too. Unmistakable exhaust note.
