They were used for market hunting back in the 1800's, some of the old muzzle loaded guns were double barreled. One barrel was fired by a percussion cap, the other by flintlock. With a single trigger that fired both at the same time. Their reasoning was the percussion cap would fire and the recoil would raise the muzzle just enough that when the flintlock fired it would catch birds taking off and missed by the first shot.

They'd go out and kill 50 birds with one shot. That was all outlawed in the US by 1918 when it became illegal to sell wild game across state lines. :yesnod:

That reminds me in a weird way when we were at the range a couple of years ago with a bunch of American stainless derringers. We had .22's right up to .44mag's and .410 shot shells! The .44 flew out of my friends hand taking a chunk of meat with it, and landed between his feet. The .410 shot shell was similar, and very loud! We laughed our heads off. :stickemup:
