Wouldn't you preplace it before you ever buy the vehicle?

most import engines are interference engines. Timing belt/chain snaps, and valves hit pistons. it's bad.

It prolly has a belt if it is an overhead cam engine. I replaced them on my Honda's and Mazda's a couple of times. If it breaks, then engine stops, almost every overhead cammed Jap engine built since the 60's is a non-interference engine. Meaning if the belt or chain breaks then all that happens is you stop. On a interference engine if it breaks then valves get bent, holes in pistons and all sorts of bad shit happens. :yesnod:
You can find out here if you engine is interference or not.

I'm just passing on what was told to me by a Honda mechanic a few years back. He could have been full of shit. :yesnod:

The 6 cyl has a belt; my 4 cyl definitely has a chain. I've read online that bad things happen wihten it breaks.
So my question is...
How do I know when it's about to need replacement?

Or if you have a Jaguar, 70,012 miles, which is when my chain broke. Only a few bent push rods....or about $2,000.

It's got 212,000 miles (original, LOL)
So... if it were your truck, and you planned on keeping it, would you go ahead and replace it? It's pretty expensive... about $800 to have it done.

So the timing chain costs about 50% of the value of the truck? Sure, I'd have it done....:leaving:

:yesnod: That's about right. I bought that truck new in '92. Next year I'm goin g to get an antique plate.
A/C still blows cold, it has the original muffler, I replaced the dash and a/c vents, and painted it with the local shop's $350 special deal. I love that truck. I have so many memories in it.
