This kind of thing isn't supposed to happen at the ballpark.
But it has.
A man attending a Texas Rangers game with his young son died after falling out of the left-field stands and about 20 feet to the ground Thursday night.
He was trying to catch a ball flipped into the stands by Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton(notes) but apparently lost his balance and fell head-first in a space between the 14-foot outfield fence and the grandstand near the Oakland Athletics bullpen.
"We had a very tragic accident tonight and one of our fans lost their life reaching over the rail trying to get a ball," team president Nolan Ryan said. "As an organization, and as our team members and our staff, we're very heavy-hearted about this, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family."
The Brownwood (Texas) Bulletin identified the man as Shannon Stone, a lieutenant in that town's fire department and a fireman for 18 years.
The accident happened in the second inning after Oakland's Conor Jackson(notes) hit a foul ball that bounced back onto the field.
Horrifying TV replays from the Oakland broadcast show Stone positioning himself to catch Hamilton's throw, then tumbling over a railing as his young son watched. A man next to Stone tried to hold onto him, but couldn't.

No doubt. Although tickets always have a release clause on them... But still, I'm sure there are some shady ambulance chasers salivating over it :sadangel:
I would have to imagine that Nolan Ryan/Rangers organization will do something for the family to make things better. Nothing can make it right, and technically they have no obligation, but I think Nolan is a stand-up guy and will have sympathy. I don't know though...
I'm gonna have to side w/ uncle on this one.
guy died, IN FRONT OF HIS KID...for a fukin baseball...and the guy next to him had a glove...he probably would have caught it and not died.
I think the dead man was greedy and reached in front of the man w/ the glove. his over reaching is what killed him.

A bunch I'm sure... and I'm sure the stadium will settle and then nets will be put in that trough.
Normally I'm all for calling out people when they suffer death by stupid, but IMO this is just a freak thing.
That said I don't think the stadium should settle... I mean do we want 10' plexi walls at the front of each section? They would have to prove negligence on the part of the stadium design. I guess they could say having the wall in front of the section with the space in between gave the illsuion of some kind of landing/platoform i.e. would cause the guy to reach out farther than if nothing was there in front at all and it was just a 20' drop to the field.

Well if you really want to follow that logical train of thought to the ultimate conclusion, we can blame God for creating the earth and people as the cause then can't we?

You need to take a step back and read what you're saying here...it was an accident, and nothing more. You're not making any sense on this one. Reaching for a baseball at a baseball game by fans is done countless times, this time it ended in tragedy due to an accident.

Wow, why stop there Josh Hamilton tossed the ball, Josh Hamilton should be charged with murder with your reasoning.
I see it differently.
Which happens every day.
This time, it was a tragic accident which cost a man his life and a son his father.
However, I would be willing to bet the man did it, as I said, to give his son something to make him happy and remember that day for the rest of his life.
Want to know how I know? Because my father would have done the same thing for me. :yesnod:
I'm willing to bet that man loved his son so much he could not fully put it into words. Want to know why I say that? Because that's how I feel about my son (and daughter).
To trivialize and demean that father they way some have done here is a disgrace, IMHO. :yesnod:
1st bold...the boy has that now doesn't he. :sadangel:
2nd bold...I don't mean to demean the man...he made a poor choice IMO.
think about this...you are there on the rail obviously to catch a ball (boy and others have mitts)..and you don't look below?
know your surroundings before making choices...it may save your life.

And you'd be dead and your family would morn, and your kids would have grown up without a father, because you over extended yourself for a $12.00 baseball.
You must be one perfect SON OF A BITCH aren’t you? Jesus Pevr it’s not like he was doing something wrong.
Yeah, I am a really bitter old asshole son-of-a-bitch for stating the obivous truth of the situation. His kid saw him die, his kid is an orphan, his family has lost his support and love forever because he was so focused on getting that frigging baseball that he toppled over the railing. It doesn't matter if he was doing something wrong he is just as dead as he would have been if he'd been driving 150mph on public streets and hit a light pole. He f*cked up and now he is dead.
:iagree: Damn. The guy was just trying to do something that would've meant the world to his kid and just reacted and tried to get the ball.
Yeah and I have done the same thing, I have caught foul balls for my own son and my father did it for me, but a man has to know his limitations. Can't you people see the ultimate stupidity of what he did? He extended 75% of his body over a rail while totally focused on catching a ball he could not reach. He chose poorly and now he is dead and his kids are without a father.
Just...wow.
I think generally statements like this are reserved for those that do really stupid shit. Stop trying to qualify.
This was really, really stupid, considering what he tried to do. For God's sake he was wearing flip-flops and he extended atleast 75% of his body over a 20 foot drop with nothing securing him. He didn't even hold on to or try to hold onto the railing. Again, how is this less stupid that somebody climbing up into a tree to get a $3.00 kite for their kid and falling to their death (it has happened.)
Someone needs to toss your ass off a building. :sadangel: for the kid, he didn't risk his life, just lost his footing, freak accident. :sadangel:
Well, monkey boy you are welcome to come and try anytime, but I weigh about 270 so you'd better eat your Wheaties before you show up. However your statement he didn't risk his life is total Bull Shit! He did risk his life, he did something ultimately that caused his death because he was so focused on getting that damned ball that he forgot where he was.
With that all said I can tell you that I am angry, I am angry as hell at the asshole for doing that and losing his life. His kid is going to be f#cked up for life because of the stupid choice his father made and lost control of himself. His family is scarred forever because of this and it could have been prevented.
Perhaps I am angry because when I was a kid, 6 years old my best friends dad got killed doing something just as stupid, I saw what it did to him and his family. His life was ruined because his Dad climbed up on a 12-1 pitch roof to get a .25 cent balsa glider for his kid. He fell off and broke his neck and died before an ambulance could get there. This was 54 years ago and I can still remember the anguish that it caused and how it ****ed up my friend's family.
So feck all of you, you have never seen the outcome of stupidity of that nature and how it destroys lives. :leaving:
Is it your assertion this is how the father intended the day to turn out for the son to remember?
NO
He had an accident based on his decision to make his son happy.
You don't know this
No I don't "look below" becase there is a rail there which has, based on the park track record of no one falling over, stopped people from falling over.
mistake IMO
Plus being I have been there at least one inning I have seen my surroundings and know what is where.
Here's a question for you, why did the guy with the glove NOT fall and the guy who die did? Answer, the guy who died LOST HIS FOOTING and had an ACCIDENT.
The guy with the glove wasnt greedy, he didnt streach in front of the guy who reached & fell & died
Do you have ANY proof the guy did NOT know his surroundings? :skep: You made this assertion now PROVE IT. :yesnod:
He fell into an unprotected area
Again, you make the assertion the father's death was caused in part by alcohol, PROVE IT! :yesnod:
I only brought it up...based on his poor judgement
You're just digging your hole deeper with crap accusations pulled from your ignorant butt. You're just showing me to be more and more correct as you disparage this father's life/death with crap accusations with no proof (so far).
I make no accusations. You can call it an accident...but it was based on poor choice & greed IMO, as he reached in front of the man with the glove.

Bam. Josh Hamilton is guilty. You can also ring up the child neglect charges because it is his actions that will cause this little boy to grow up mentally scarred and without a father. By the logic used by some here regarding the Casey Anthony trial... my list of charges is justified.

The ball was thrown to Shannon Stone, a firefighter from Brownwood, Texas, by Rangers outfielder and reigning American League Most Valuable Player Josh Hamilton, after he called out to the baseball player to throw him a foul ball. Stone fell over the railing in his attempt to catch it.
Josh Hamilton 'Very Distraught' Over Death of Texas Rangers Fan - Real People Stories : People.com (http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20508757,00.html)
Co-workers mourn Shannon Stone.
It was a difficult Friday morning for the Brownwood Fire Department as the 30-person staff gathered to grieve the death of Shannon Stone.
Stone, 39, fell over a railing in left field at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington and landed on a concrete surface about 20 feet below. He was transported by ambulance to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, where he was pronounced dead. Stone's 6-year-old son witnessed the fall.
Stone was a lieutenant and 18-year member of the Brownwood Fire Department. Those he worked alongside for years spent time with each other Friday morning, along with one of the department chaplains.
"You worry about him getting hurt fighting a fire, and I always worry about that with my guys, but this is something you don't expect," Brownwood fire chief Del Albright said. Albright said he found out about the tragedy when he received a call Thursday night from someone in the Arlington Fire Department wanting to confirm Stone worked in Brownwood.
Mike and Mike in the Morning
Brad Ziegler was in the A's bullpen and heard the conscious Rangers fan ask for paramedics to check on his son before he was pronounced dead. Ziegler says it's a surreal feeling and Josh Hamilton did nothing wrong.

Albright said Stone's son and any other family or friends that were at the game returned to Brownwood early Friday morning. Funeral arrangements have not been made.
"Whatever the family wants, we'll make it happen," Albright said. "We have traditions and ways of remembering our fallen brothers and sisters with honor guards and flag ceremonies. We'll talk with the family and see what we need to do."
Albright, 50, described Stone as a reliable firefighter and a consummate family man.
"He was so dedicated to his son and family and a dedicated firefighter," Albright said. "Whenever he was off duty, he was with his son. We had officer meetings and I would ask him to come in on his day off to attend those and nine out of 10 times he had his son with him. He was dependable. I left him in charge of many fires I went to because I knew he could handle it."
Albright said he presented Stone and another firefighter with a distinguished service medal in 2008 for rescuing an elderly woman from a "heavily-involved" structure fire.
"The elderly woman didn't want to leave," Albright said. "She was conscious, but confused because of the smoke. Shannon calmed her down, got her under the smoke and got her out."
As a lieutenant, Stone was in charge of Station 2 and ran one of the engine companies, which included three other firefighters. Captain Robert Myers, 53, knew Stone for all 18 years of his service.
"I guess probably the most important thing to remember about him is he had a heart of gold," Myers said. "He had a rough exterior, but he'd do anything for anybody and he loved the fire service and the guys he worked with and his family. He had that little boy with him 24-7 when he was around."
Myers said Stone always seemed to know what to do when the pressure was high.
"He could stay calm and go into rough situations and get the job done," Myers said. "He was one of those guys. I've worked with him on car wrecks, fires, medical calls. He's one of those guys that cared about people and did what he could to take care of them."

That, my brother, takes a mature man to admit. You didn't offend me with your OP, but I just wanted to say I commend you for stepping up to admit a mistake. A lot of mofo's won't do that.
:iagree:
A rare refreshing moment on the interwebs.
:sadangel: for the kid who had to watch his dad make such a poor choice.

Again I apologize.

yeah
I may have also been a little harsh in my assessment.
as I posted earlier, I feel terrible for the young lad & his family.
dammit, I wish that man would have not made the choice to lean for that ball.
like uncle posted, we all make poor choices...and some can lead to tragic outcomes.

How about an apology for the following comments now that you have finally come to the realization that it was an accident?
I'm gonna have to side w/ uncle on this one.
guy died, IN FRONT OF HIS KID...for a fukin baseball...and the guy next to him had a glove...he probably would have caught it and not died.
I think the dead man was greedy and reached in front of the man w/ the glove. his over reaching is what killed him.
for a FUKIN' BASEBALL!

And you'd be dead and your family would morn, and your kids would have grown up without a father, because you over extended yourself for a $12.00 baseball.
:leaving:Holy shit, baseballs are $12?

Hell... there is more proof against Josh than there was against Casey Anthony. :leaving:
Did Josh Hamilton's neglegent actions cause the death of Shannon Stone? Absolutely. Had he thrown the ball farther, like he should have by all reasonable expectations, Mr. Stone would not have died.
Bam. Josh Hamilton is guilty. You can also ring up the child neglect charges because it is his actions that will cause this little boy to grow up mentally scarred and without a father. By the logic used by some here regarding the Casey Anthony trial... my list of charges is justified.
Of course the f'n jury will let the scumbag go.
Hamilton was throwing the ball to a different guy.:leaving:

Josh Hamilton 'Very Distraught' Over Death of Texas Rangers Fan - Real People Stories : People.com (http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20508757,00.html)
That means Hamilton needs to learn how to throw since the ball wasn't towards the fan that called for the ball.

he threw the ball right at the fan with the glove. the man who was killed leaned in front of the man with the glove who the ball was heading directly at. the lean is what caused the man to go over the rail.
this is my opinion from watching the video.

It's the same as in hockey.
Now they have the mesh covering over the end glass to catch pucks so peoples teeth don't have to anymore.

If I recall correctly, the netting went up after 13-year-old Brittanie Cecil died as a result of a puck to the head.

Thousands expected for funeral of fan who fell

BROWNWOOD, Texas - Front-office executives from the Texas Rangers and firefighters from across Texas were expected to arrive in this town Monday for the funeral of the 39-year-old man who fell to his death trying to catch a souvenir baseball tossed by his son's favorite player.
Shannon Stone was to be remembered at a memorial service Monday at the First United Methodist Church, followed by a procession to the cemetery that was expected to include more than 100 fire trucks.
The family hoped to limit the crowd inside the church to family and friends. Everyone else is being asked to line the 8-mile route from the church to the cemetery.
"We're expecting certainly hundreds, if not thousands, to come out and support this family at this time," Brownwood Mayor Stephen Haynes said.
Haynes spoke Sunday night as he left a visitation of Stone at a funeral home. He said family was trying to celebrate Stone's life, "but it's still difficult to accept, obviously, the nature of the death and the timing of the death and the way that it happened."
Stone took his 6-year-old son, Cooper, to a Rangers game about a three-hour drive away in Arlington on Thursday night. They stopped to buy the boy a new glove on the way, and sat in left field, behind Cooper's favorite player, Josh Hamilton.
Hamilton threw them a foul ball, but the thrill quickly turned tragic. Stone fell headfirst about 20 feet onto concrete, with Cooper watching. Witnesses said Stone was conscious after landing and spoke about Cooper being left alone. Stone was pronounced dead within an hour; an autopsy ruled the cause as blunt force trauma from the fall.
Stone had been with the Brownwood fire department since 1993. He was voted Firefighter of the Year twice by his peers, according to the mayor, and had risen to the rank of lieutenant. He also worked as a paramedic, and as a rescue technician at Texas Motor Speedway. He also was involved in disaster relief following Hurricanes Katrina and Ike, and fighting wildfires.
"When you're married to someone that's a first responder ... you always are leery that you're going to get that phone call or your going to have the chaplain come," said Trease Burke, whose husband, Scotty, was a Brownwood police officer for 14 years and is now on the Lake Patrol. "You don't expect it to be a freak accident."
Scotty Burke described Stone as "a firefighter's firefighter." He recalled that during the town's annual, three-day reunion celebration, Stone cooked barbecue for the officers and firefighters working the event.
"He always did it out of his pocket," Burke said. Smiling, he added, "And it was good. I used to work in a barbecue restaurant, so I know good barbecue."
Like many leaving the funeral home, Burke's voice crackled with emotion. Plenty of folks came out holding tissues, with more tears in their eyes.
Media was asked to stay out of the funeral home. Many of those leaving the building declined to be interviewed, citing the family's wishes.
"Brownwood is a tight place," Burke said. "When something like this happens, people come together and they take care of you."
Brownwood is a town of about 20,000 residents in the Hill Country of central Texas, some 150 miles west of the Rangers' stadium in Arlington. Flags across the area have been at half-staff since Friday, with several wreaths and a dozen yellow roses left in his memory at a monument outside the fire department.
"We're a small town," Haynes said. "We're not (small) enough that everyone knows everyone, but we are small enough that everyone is impacted in some way. Everyone has a friend or family member who was close to that family."
Haynes said there already has been discussion of a permanent way of remembering Stone.
"Certainly we're going to do what we can to keep his memory and the honor of what he stands for alive for as long as we can," Haynes said.
Jarratt Lawler grew up with Stone in Cleburne, about 100 miles from Brownwood. They weren't especially close, but renewed acquaintances a year ago at their 20-year high school reunion. Lawler was so moved by Stone's death that he drove 3½ hours from McKinney with his pregnant wife and young daughter just to pay his respects on Sunday because he couldn't make it to the funeral Monday.
"He was an all-around good guy," Lawler said. "He was just always trying to help people, always did the right things."
