Fisherman discover 23-foot long squid

Posted: Jun 28, 2011 12:44 PM EDT

MARTIN COUNTY, FL (WFLX) - Robert Benz and his buddies were fishing Sunday about 12 miles offshore from Port Salerno when they spotted something floating in the water.

"We pulled up, thought it was something to fish on, a pallet or something like that. We looked at it, all three of us were like 'holy mackerel,'" recalled Benz.

It turned out to be a 23-foot long giant squid. It's a rare find in our waters. The main part of the body was about 11-feet long, but with its two long tentacles, it barely fit in the 23-foot boat Benz was riding in. But he knew they had to bring it ashore.

"Nobody believes a fisherman," said Benz. "It didn't seem it had been dead long, the tentacles were still moving and it was sticking to you when we got it in.

So what is it about the squid that makes us a little squeamish?

Ellie Van Os, Director of Education and Exhibits at the Florida Oceanographic Society, says it's not common to see a squid of that size.

"It's foreign to imagine that there's an animal with 8 arms and 2 tentacles that are twice as long as the arms and their mouth is in the middle of their arms... and big eyes."

As for where the giant squid is now, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission has gotten involved and taken it to its facility in St. Petersburg for a necropsy to do some more research on this mysterious creature.

Those monsters actually have tiny teeth on the inside of the suckers that dig in, and the more you struggle, the more they dig in. Good thing is was mostly dead when it latched on. :yesnod:

I was in Newfoundland last week, and went to a few fishing industry museums, and it was quite common for fishermen to haul these during the early years, from the 1500's to the early 20th century! Lots of old pics, and one in a preservation tank! Ughhhh......:ack:

That's the fault of the cook.
Usually means it's been over-cooked.

Cooked properly calamari should have a little chew to it and be tender.

I like octopus(the tentacle part) on the bbq with lot's of lemon and some oregano with a touch of olive oil.

Watching a cooking show one day, Bobby Flay explained how to tell when shimp is properly cooked. When the shrimp is U shaped, it is "U"ndercooked. A C shape means "C"ooked. O is "O"vercooked. Never thought of it that way but it is a good rule of thumb.

I'm gonna tell that to the gourmet chef over at Red Lobster. No more overcooked shrimp! :hurray:

My last meal at Red Lobster was the second time in a year they brought me crab legs still frozen in the center. Wife and I got up and left, went to Publix and bought some frozen crab legs and then steamed them when we got home. Better than any restraunt has ever served IMHO.
