Seen it happen at a tractor show.

Everyone was freaking out, one old fart calmly walked up to it an tossed a towel in the intake.

Stopped it in seconds, no air, no run.

Here is a real runaway.

I'm guessing there was no fuel shut-off.

I'm guessing there was no fuel shut-off.

Turbo bearing goes, leaking oil into intake. It will run till it runs out of oil or locks up.

Funny thing about diesels... Diesel fuel is oil. Anything combustible that gets into the cylinder becomes fuel, including oil if you start getting crankcase oil into the cylinder.

Even better is when a turbo seal blows and starts shooting oil into the intake. Shutting off fuel won't do any good because the engine is running off the oil!

Was there a dog or a suffocating person in that bag?

Yeah... if it ever happens, your best bet is to stand back and just let it die.

Back when I was going to a Diesel school, one of the students rebuilt a Cat and forgot to put the oil wiper rings in. The engine ran away on the test stand. It took less than 5 seconds for the test room to empty out with the exception of myself and the instructor. He handed me a 12 inch thick manual and told me to put it on the intake. Oh the idiot also forgot to hook up the air kill valve.
The intake sucked the book in like a soup bowl. It stopped the engine from exploding but damn did it make an impression on me.
The same idiot when we were in the fuels class kept leaning on the battery cables and restarting the Detroit. He did get his shirt sucked up into the blower as well.
