SUMTER, SC (WIS) - Sumter police say they caught a woman who robbed a Sumter bank Monday afternoon after the woman's family tipped investigators off.
Frances R. Ellison, 51, faces charges of entering a bank with intent to steal, according to Police Chief Patty Patterson.
Patterson said Ellison walked into the SAFE Federal Credit Union on McCray's Mill Road around 3:00pm and told the teller to fill a bag with a large amount of money. The teller complied, and Patterson said Ellison left. No one was injured.
Witnesses described the robber to responding officers, who immediately began searching the area. During the search, law enforcement received a call from someone in Ellison's family who said Ellison had returned to her home off of Starks Ferry Road with a large amount of cash.
Officers responded to the house and verified that the cash had been taken from the SAFE Federal Credit Union. Patterson said Ellison was positively identified as the robber and arrested. A bond hearing will be scheduled at a later date.
