What say you? He is 10. I'm thinking a knife that locks would be safer. Although I'm not even sure a 10 year old needs a knife anyway.

Just a reminder they come from the factory very sharp :yesnod:

Is he responsible? Level headed? If so, let him get one. Better yet, it would extremely cool if Dad got him his first pocket knife.

10yo and he doesn't have his own knife?

Give him a knife safety course, and then the knife.

Let him know that if you ever find out that he was being careless or not following knife safety rules, you'll watch him throw it away in such a manner that he'll never be able to retrieve it. :yesnod: That, and he'll never own another one until he's an adult.

When I was 10, my Mom bought me a pellet/BB gun just because I was 10 years old and didn't already have my own gun.

I got my first knife when I entered boy scouts, I was taught proper use, and safety. I was about 10 or 11. Did me good. If not I know I would have cut myself.

We keep saying no to the vultures. Super tough biz. We are forming a 501c3 to make our curriculum available to any teacher who needs it.

That way we protect kids IP rights, turn kids on to science and help teachers do the job. Win/win.

We will be hitting up the Dells, Microsofts, Samsungs, IBMs of the world to support it.

It would be so easy to sell his soul out from under him, but we just don't work that way. I don't even answer the phone anymore if the area code is LA.

Get him the knife. Does he have a brother? It's fun to go to the emergency room on New Year's Eve at 11:30pm and explain to the doc how younger son got his finger cut by his own pocket knife that older brother was using and younger son reached for. 5 stitches for the index finger! He was the first official injury for New Year's!

That's Thrakk's fear right there. He's an only child but I'm sure he can find a way.

The hospital should have at least bought the kid a set of steak knives, you know, like the way the first baby of the new year gets sent home with a years supply of diapers.

Get him the knife, my grandson was 8 and in the Cub Scouts when we got him a knife. He's nearly 10 now and has always followed all the rules for carrying and using his knife.
He is a very well behaved boy and a straight A student. Now my next grandson is nearly 6 and I wouldn't give him a knife until he was 21, he's wild as a March Hare and will try anything.
So it depends on the kid. :yesnod:

Word. Teach him the "rules" and he will be fine. I had my first knife at 7....and the scars to prove it. Closed the ole swiss army knife on my thumb once. Gotta learn somehow.

My son had the safety course, and still cut himself within hours of getting it. (A Gerber, as I recall). Should've just made a reservation at the ER when we gave him the knife.

I got my 1st pocket knife at 6. Promptly cut myself. Parents took the knife away for a month. BFD

Got the knife back, then turned slasher. Took out 3 cats and a hamster. Parents took away my pocket knife for good.

So I began making them.
And talking to them.
And they talk back.

Depends on his disposition. And if he is responsible now ... he may not be later.

My two boys have had various pocket knives for years.

I did keep them for a while, when they weren't out camping or doing something they really needed a knife for ... because they were "play" threatening their sister.

Years later, when the oldest was 16, decides he is Rambo, tossing knife in the air, comes down on arm, artery, off to the hospital. :kick: Dumb ass.

It aint only kids that cut themselves. Everytime this knife comes outta my pocket, someone says, "Hey that's cool, lemme see"

So I flick the blade open via the toggle, and pretty much everyone closes it on their finger.

I'll say. Back in the day the Cub Scout knife had a retainer on it so you could clip it to your belt and everyone at school could see it.

I'd say 10 years old is ready.

I was thinking of this because of this thread...

I remember my wood shop teacher telling us to use our pocket knife to clean off the burrs on wood sometimes left after cutting.

back then...it was assumed 10-12 y/o boys had a pocket knife with them.

We are fu@ked as a society & a country. Political correctness is killing us from the inside out.

I am sure they do.

But the purpose of a pocketknife is to actually get it out of your pocket.

With all those hooks, angles, and clips, what does it take, 15-20 minutes to get it out of your pocket?:D
