Before the wedding, Mildred confessed that she had had an affair while he was away in the Army. This admission shook him; in later interviews he said it was "the most devastating moment of my life." A 2006 E! Entertainment TV profile of Hefner revealed that Mildred not only allowed him to sleep with other women, she encouraged it, out of guilt for her infidelity and in the hopes that it would balance things between them to preserve their marriage. Referring to the misery of his first marriage, Hefner later said, "My marriage was like the jobs I had before I started Playboy - the kind of compromises most of us make in the adult world."

The atmosphere in post-war America was bursting with sexual repression and double standards. Instead of the jubilation and Roaring 20s after WWI, postwar America saw the skirts get longer. The 1948 Kinsey Report on Male Sexuality was a controversial influence particularly on young Hefner, who made sex a study of his own. A lifelong cartoonist since childhood, Hefner published a collection of his own racy cartoons, titled That Toddlin' Town: A Rowdy Burlesque of Chicago Manners and Morals in 1951 just for fun. Lenny Bruce's career attacking hypocrisy and challenging the definition of obscenity was on the rise in the Fifties. The Beat Generation also rose to prominence as a cultural phenomena that embraced many rebellious forms, including alternative forms of sexuality, a challenge to Puritanical religion, and a liberation of conservative literature and language. Charles Atlas rose to prominence as a builder of men's bodies, with studios all over the USA hardening and sculpting men into hunks who no longer got sand kicked in their faces, but instead won the hearts of beautiful women who flocked to those Atlas-ian muscles. 1953 saw the publication of the first James Bond book, Casino Royale, the first of many featuring the derring-do of the smooth, single agent 007 who dressed impeccably, drove fancy cars, enjoyed all the technological gadgets at his disposal, and bedded as many women as he wanted. All of these had a direct or indirect impact on young Hefner.

When Hefner was denied a $5 raise at Esquire magazine, he quit, only to find little opportunity out there. He took a job at a children's magazine to make ends meet, but hated it. As he examined his next steps, Hef found he felt stifled by his marriage, even though he enjoyed the freedom he was granted to womanize. Hefner even once tried to set up a foursome with his wife, Mildred, his younger brother Keith, and Keith's wife, Rae. Apparently Mildred and Keith backed out, while Hefner followed through and slept with his sister-in-law. By 1956, the couple separated. While his marriage declined, he explored a few homosexual encounters, and later admitted to being bi-sexual, but found he was predominantly into feminine charms. The only magazines of the day for men were basically hunting, fishing, sports, and bodybuilding themes. With all his savings and loans from his mother and other family members, the timing was perfect to create his own magazine embracing the life of the liberated, sophisticated bachelor. In his opening editorial, Hefner positioned Playboy in opposition to the outdoor men's magazines, writing, "We don't mind telling you in advance - we plan on spending most of our time inside. We like our apartment. We enjoy mixing up cocktails … and inviting in a female acquaintance for a quiet discussion on Picasso, Nietzsche, jazz, sex."

The magazine launched in 1953, featuring the now-famous nude photos of Marilyn Monroe Hef bought from a Chicago calendar manufacturer, was such a hit, all 53,000 undated copies sold. As if kismet was at work, ironically, 1953 was the same year Marilyn Monroe's film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes opened. As the magazine evolved -- the development of the Bunny logo, the invention of the centerfold, the inclusion of notable authors -- Hef reinvented himself from a married man with children, into the embodiment of the Playboy image that appealed to single, young men all over the USA. Marketing this image also brought an ever-changing coterie of young women to Hefner as he developed the Playmate of the Month, basically a pin-up not unlike the pin-up photos soldiers liked during the war. As Playboy and its image grew, offices were opened, staff increased, and by 1959, Hefner and Millie finally divorced. She got the house and the kids, alimony and child support, while he purchased and refurbished the 72-room Playboy Mansion in Chicago's Gold Coast and began planning the Playboy Clubs.
