WooHoo! Go Corvette! One year I will be there in person.

It is lame how the regulations continue to get more stringent...do we really need to restrict the LMP1 cars power? Corvette qualified 4th and 6th. So far, Ollie is up to 2nd.

OH SHIT

One of the Audi R18's just hit the wall and shattered to bits. :(

Allan Mcnish-- took a Ferrari out too!

John Wiz

Holy Crap,, hope he's OK... DAMN...

Thud
06-11-2011, 8:58am
He walked away.

The Ferrari Italia, amazingly, was lifted back to the track and it just drove away with some smoke coming out from the rear end.

Watching the replay, it looked like a stupid move from McNish-- he tried to cut through the inside of a curve and just plowed into the Ferrari. Some of the folks on the other side of the wall need an underwear change now! That was close.

I wonder if Audi is gonna rebuild that car?

*edit* It doesn't look like McNish did anything stupid-- the Ferrari was hidden by the other car can probably came into view too late.

John Wiz
06-11-2011, 9:01am
I'm wondering if McNish had a good view of the Ferrari ahead of the other car, the Ferrari definitely wouldn't have seen him coming. That was a hell of a wreck, and those photographers almost had a car on top of them. There is a reason you have to sign a waiver when you're shooting those races.

OK, let me start off by admitting (grudgingly) I'm no professional driver. However, I've done a boatload of trackdays and I know from my own measly experience you need to know more about what's going on than just one car ahead of you. I know there's a massive speed difference but it's not like the F-car just appeared out of nowhere.
Still, glad to see both drivers Ok.

From Speed.com

10:55 p.m.: We're going to be under caution for quite some time. The armco barrier is heavily damaged, more so than McNish's accident. It has been a disastrous race for Audi, with two of their new R18s having been totaled in monstrous accidents. One positive thing to take away from this that Audi switched to closed top-designed cars this year. Imagine if these accidents would have occurred with the open-top R15s.

10:50 p.m.: CONFIRMED: Mike Rockenfeller climbed from the car under his own power. He's been taken off to the ambulance by a stretcher. There is literally nothing left of the car. It's no doubt one of the worst crashes in Le Mans history

Sounds like he was very lucky considering the clip of the replay on TV. Wow did that car seem to come apart.

Jeff '79

That GT Ferrari driver is gonna be in trouble. The announcers said he was supposed to stay in that left lane around the turn. I guess he wanted to hit the apex and didn't see the Audi flying up behind him?

Seriously though, I think the ACO needs to seriously consider red flagging crashes this bad. This does no one any good. It's not any good for the cars just following a pace car, burns gas/diesel, wears tires and bores the shit out of fans. We're very well on track to have a full 10% of this "race" run under caution. Fkn boring.

I'd say the Porsche is by far the closest to it's street car version. All Porsche race cars are built in the same Porsche factory & on the same assembly line as the GT series of cars, & are built from the same body shells. The race engines are the same displacement as in the street GT3 RS 4.0, with the street car even using the exact same crankshaft as the race cars. :yesnod:

Pratt & Miller do an awesome job building the race vettes. Never heard of a street Corvette with a 5.5 liter motor though. :leaving:

OK, great. But the Porsche Cup cars don't run at LeMans.

Nobody (especially me) is knocking Porsche. There is no doubt that their factory built race cars that are available for purchase are awesome cars and I could only dream that Chevrolet would build a factory turn key race car like they do.

Porsche Cup cars and the GT3RS at Nurburgring don't change the argument in regards to the cars that ran AT LeMANS.

YouTube - Justin Bell -- ZR1 / C6.R Tech Transfer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXbSY9v1VAU)

I've still got the issue he's actually referring to. The big thing there was the performance. Due to the ZR1 actually having more power than the race car, there was less of a time drop between the lap times for the race car vs street car. That's where he's getting the Corvette being closer.

I've hung out with Justin & he's a cool guy, but I'd keep in mind he's an ex team driver, so I'd expect some bias from him.

I talked to him briefly at VIR once and he did seem pretty cool. The whole broadcast was biased, there is no question about that. It was very clear that Audi and Chevrolet were the ones paying the bills for Speed Channel.

The argument comparing the cars wasn't mine. I was simply repeating what was said. There is also absolutely no question that Porsche is in a league of their own with building factory race cars for consumers. Too bad we'll most likely never see Chevrolet do anything like that.

Sorry - I didn't realize we were totally splitting hairs - but my point remains - the 997 GT3 RSR cars Porsche builds for the LeMans privateer teams (as opposed to the 997GT3 Cup run in the Porsche Cup and other endurance events) are much more closely related to the road going GT3 Porsche builds for homologation, than the C6.R Pratt and Miller builds, is to the ZR1 that comes out of Bowling Green.

the Porsche Cup cars are basically factory race cars that anybody can buy in either road or AGO spec trim.

Hmmmmmmmmm.............

How come? They did it for the C4.

Sorry - I didn't realize we were totally splitting hairs

I was talking specifically about the segment shown during the race. Nothing else.

I never disagreed.

C4 Corvette Racing History | Corvette Challenge Racing Series History and Background (http://showyourcorvette.com/history.php)

The Challenge cars were not built by GM. They were sent by GM to have the modifications made. They rolled off the line like any other Vette coupe, NOT ready for competition.

I'll tell ya what... when I buy a Vette complete with cage, harnesses, and all of the other goodies so I can drive it straight onto the track and into competition (like Porsche does) I will admit that my prediction was wrong.

I will also add that the Challenge cars at Mid Ohio were my introduction to road racing. I went to some pretty great lengths to track down the "mandatory" sponsor decals and used a few to fill some space and at the same time pay a small tribute to that on my current car. I decided to leave the actual "Corvette Challenge" off of the car so people wouldn't think I was trying to pass it off as something it most obviously isn't.

One of the Ford cars had "Riverside Ford, Macon Georgia" on the side, so why not.

Yeah, that would be just the same as having a Porsche race car with "The Vette Barn" on it. :slap:
