My spoiled little princess wants to go into the Peace Corp, before she goes into med school...She's taking the MCAT's in July, but wants to take a year or two , and go in the Peace Corp first....I have mixed emotions about this, but , hey....It's her life.....
Has anyone ever been in the Peace Corp here ????...I Know a lot of you have been in the WAR Corp, but I'd like to hear your experiences, whether it is your own, or someone that you know that's been in....
Frickin' blondes......

I bet she thinks she wants to join the peace corps.

I also bet she has some liberal friend persuading or influencing her.

Don't let her do it. She is waaaay to young & cute & blonde.

She probably has no clue as to the realities of the rest of the world.

Good looking slim going off to foreign lands with (what I'm guessing, will be a group with no means of self defense other than throwing kashi bars at aggressors.... Not the neatest idea out there. Ask her why she doesn't want to help out here instead of foreign places most likely with god knows how much of our tax $$$ flowing to them.

ALL of the above negatives PLUS....they will KILL HER one way or another....

outright or through AIDS.....reality check man....lock her in the basement toss the key, if necessary....

My son went to So. Africa some years ago, and if not for email and his posting like a idiot from there, and MY reply about first thing to WATCH HIS PECKER and HIS LIFE!!! I sincerely think he would be dead.....

age 19 or so, trip to So. Africa, by himself basically ....stupid mother, nothing else to say,

I have NO clue as to his health today.....

IF you had any clue as to the reality hidden in the propaganda over that foreign service and what happens to our kids over there, and let alone the chicks....

Very little I can say good about the Peace Corps. A couple I used to work with allowed their daughter to join the Peace Corps after graduated from college.
They sent her to Mongolia, the best thing that she got out of was the ability to speak Mongolian. She also caught several parasitic infections and nearly died. :yesnod:

And the only way I am letting a BLONDE into some of those parts of the world is under a Nazi flag.

In 1968 when I enlisted they had a question asking if you had ever belonged to the Peace Corps. I asked my recruiter about it and he said you were considered a security risk if you answered yes. You wouldn't be barred from enlisting but obtaining a security clearance would be problematic.

When I went on recruiting duty in 1979 I noticed the question was not there but I was told it was still an issue when applying for a security clearance.

If she wants to good in the world, get her MD and stay in the U.S.

An American Indian reservation is an area of land managed by a Native American tribe under the United States Department of the Interior's Bureau of Indian Affairs. There are about 310 Indian reservations in the United States, meaning not all of the country's 550-plus recognized tribes have a reservation — some tribes have more than one reservation, some share reservations, while others have none.

The quality of life on most reservations is comparable to that in the developing world, with issues of infant mortality, life expectancy, nutrition and poverty, and alcohol and drug abuse. For example, Shannon County, South Dakota, home of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, is routinely described as one of the poorest counties in the nation.

Appalachia. The region defined currently includes 420 counties and eight independent cities in 13 states, including all of West Virginia and 14 counties in New York, 52 in Pennsylvania, 32 in Ohio, 3 in Maryland, 54 in Kentucky, 25 counties and 8 cities in Virginia,[3] 29 in North Carolina, 52 in Tennessee, 6 in South Carolina, 37 in Georgia, 37 in Alabama, and 24 in Mississippi.

Take care of Americans 1st.

No, Joey...you cannot date my daughter. She is gorgeous...and she would make you cry like a girl.

Lack of proper medical facilities for anyone hurt or injured is a huge problem. People in the Peace Corp have died from seemingly treatable injuries and illnesses.

a friend from highschool was in the peace corps for two years. she was sent to Paraguay (mid 90's) my sister went to visit her for a couple weeks. I am not aware of anything terrible happening to her while she was there, but when she came home, she was bat shit crazy and then disappeared here in this country, never to be seen or heard from again...

I wouldnt let her go.

We took my then GF with us to visit family in Mexico and ended up having to put her in the middle of our group - just to keep the men away (young and old) who just wanted to touch her. Green eyed petite blond - they literally thought she was an angel.

As others have said there are a lot of places in America she could go and help out.

This, didn't read all the posts, but all you have to do is a goolge search on "peace corps + whatever crime your mind can conjure up".
I heard a few horror stories from a group transiting through Accra, Ghana. Their experience in Ivory Coast involved rape (repeated & extended), torture, little to no assistance from anyone, violent physical assault. I am rather skeptical, but the look on these kids faces and their demeanor during the converssation (over many drinks).. led me to believe them

Seriously though... attractive blond american girl = death/rape/sex-slave trade. If she wants to see the world then maybe join the military as an officer and do it with the power of the US behind you.

I agree that central/south America would be one thing, but Africa/ME no way. The more I think about it the more I'd be against much more than Canada... I last went to Nicaragua my Senior year of college in 2003 and it was ok, but these days things are getting worse and worse.

I admire her desire to help people. There are alot of other options out there to help people who really need it with much less risk of death. I know a guy who travels alot with the American Red Cross responding to disasters. It would be alot smarter to get the medical degree first and then to serve the needy. She can dig wells or hand out water bottles now or save lives in a few years....and probably qualify for some loan forgiveness too.

Her recruiter misinformed you and her. Serving in the Peace Corps would make a service member ineligible to work in any intelligence field for a period of 4 years after the end of Peace Corps service but in no way does it now nor has it ever disqualified anyone from military service.
