my laptop has been running hot lately, to the point it will just shut down unexpectedly. i opened it up and cleaned it out (wasnt really dirty at all).
i started looking around and im in favor of a USB driven one like this...
Logitech - Lapdesk N700 with Speakers (http://www.logitech.com/en-us/notebook-products/cooling-pads/devices/6564)
anyone have a better suggestion? TIA
Do you really sit it on your lap or does it sit on a desk?

believe me, that was my first thought... :D
No really.
If its in your lap most of the time, I have this one:

I found it in one of the SkyMall magazines about 5 yrs ago.
I will cost you some run time plugged into your USB.
If on a desk, just prop the back of it up with gell pad or something like this:

it sits on a desk. so you think just lifting it up is enough? i was thinking something with a fan like i posted...

Works for me, I have an old wrist gel pad that was going to be pitched at work.
Gives it a nice angle and keeps it cool.
Looks like this one:

I was very surprised to find it was near silent.
I actually was just looking for a pad, no fan, but it was cheap. My work laptop got extra hot the other day so I plugged in the USB and barely heard the fan come on.

One thing to watch with them fan pads.....that it fits into your carry case with the computer and crap.....
many/most of them don't wife has like a 19?" Dell, and so a fan to fit, and then a mad hat search for a friggin' CASE to carry it all in....PIA....
and expensive, damnit....
