I'm considering looking into adopting a retired military working dog and was wondering if any of you happened to have any experience with these dogs and/or the process? I have a decent size (2500 sq ft) house on just under an acre with a fenced yard and figured it'd be a pretty ideal situation, especially since I'm pretty active.
Cheers
When I was a kid, we had a German Shepherd who was a police reject... he was too high strung for the force, but he was a great dog, after a lot of work.

Yeah, I figured I'd probably wind up doing Police/Military training classes with any dog I adopted regardless of its disposition simply so we are both on the same page with one another

A guy I used to work with was an Air Force dog handler during the Viet Nam war. He's a big wig with the guard dog association and has been harboring over aged dogs for years. I used to have a link to his site but I can't find it now.
You got to remember that some of these dogs might have PTSD.

That was my first thought on reading this thread. I would be worried that the pooch would be a little twitchy after having been in the sand box.
I don't know anything about adopting them. But good luck to you man.

Do you have any advice with respect to them?
Yes, I used to have a retired military dog. It was a German Shepard and only took commands in German. Had a great temperament unless you messed with him. He was content to just sleep, eat and play, but he knew when it was business time. All I had to do is give a command in German and he would spring to action.
