I think I may have mentioned that a friend of mine road out the EF-5 tornado in Joplin two weeks ago in a small tornado shelter she had installed just last year. I didn't realize it was a kevlar shelter, having never seen it in person.

Check out the Fox News story and video (http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/06/01/kevlar-bunker-provides-safehouse-tornado-survivor/), pretty cool.

That is cool, I never knew they made shelters out of Kevlar. It must have been an experience to ride out the storm in there.

When I read 4'x4' I was thinking 4'x4'x4' and was thinking how much that would suck.

But that room definitely looks like a great above-ground option for tornado prone areas. :cool1:

That's pretty amazing.

I couldn't see any video on the OP's original link so for those of you that can't either, I found the video on YT.

Just FYI, the video is actually at the top of the page where the story starts...you should see a picture of a window...click on that for the video. But YT for the win sans the commercial! :hurray:

She says that minutes before the twister hit, she ran into the 4 foot by 4 foot shelter that was bolted to her concrete garage floor made of Kevlar.

So, was the garage floor made of Kevlar or concrete? :confused5:

We are going to build a shed at the back of our property this year and put one of these babies in it. May not be the Dupont brand, other manufacturers are making these now. I wish I had room in my garage for one but there's just no way.

However, there are some things that happen in a tornado that this sort of shelter would not protect you from. Flying debris is one thing, but there was a home on the east side of Joplin that had a large piece of earth moving equipment land on it. I don't think kevlar and plywood would stand up to a 7-ton chunk of machinery. The people in that home survived because they weren't in the part of the house that was flattened. Another home got torpedoed by a large above-ground propane tank (about 1000 gallon), no explosion but a nice fire afterwards.

Dumbass said the garage floor was made of Kevlar:
