View Full Version : Early photos of new Tesla Model S
This is the car that will be build in the old Toyota plant in Fremont, CA. The car is in Alpha Testing. Tesla plans on high production numbers. (Have read in the vicinity of 20k cars a year) There will be 3 different ranges based on the battery pack you chose, and thus what you want to spend. (120, 240, and 300 miles per charge) The BASE car will start @ 49990 AFTER the federal credit of 7500. Tesla hopes that the cost will come down significantly with the help of Toyota teaching them how to mass produce the car.
To me the Model S has some current Jaguar & Maserati lines.
*Still early so info may change.

Still don’t like the idea of no power back up.
120 miles?
Is that with A/C on or OFF?
Rush hour traffic where you may move slowly for 30 – 40 minutes in the blazing sun. Will it still get you home?
Will aggressive driving take you from 120 miles to 20 instantly?
It would not bother me to drive an electric car but I would have to take the Volt technology over the Tesla technology give it has a back up to get me home, and in comfort.
Cold is hell on batterys, will it work just as well in the winter? How does it heat w/o killing the mileage?

See this is where electric cars differ from gasoline cars. Sitting in traffic barely moving doesn't consume all that much energy (except if running the a/c full blast). Cars like the leaf actually have an extra battery in the trunk to power the a/c.
You are absolutely right tho that electric cars are not capable of completely replacing gas cars, and IDK if they ever will be. But there is a decent market that can survive just as well on electric cars. As time goes on, and technology improves, they can only get better.
when I can get a 200-300 mile range in an all electric pickup...I will buy it.
but, I won't pay 50 grand for it.

Then you'll never own one.

I like the lines of it. Looks good but I still cannot see spending that kind of money for a vehicle with such limited utility.
I like it.
:iagree: and if they get the mileage "right" I will buy one

Absolutely...I would to. You're going to have to adapt, but for the overall cost to own I am quite willing to do so.

:iagree: Good looking vehicle, but when you run out of juice, there's no walking to the nearest service station for a recharge.
Actually, if I was dumb enough to own it, I'd walk to the nearest bar and have a few and wonder why I bought the damn thing.
Then you'll never own one.
you are probably correct.
the next generation may though.

What goes around comes around as they say. Back in the beginning of the 20th Century electric cars were big sellers in the cities where there were paved streets. Great for getting around town and you didn't have to crank them or light a fire and make steam to get underway. The electric starter, paved highways, and cheap gas killed them.
Hmmm... I would have said the styling cues were more Hyundai and BMW 6-series, than Jag and Maserati.
Or perhaps all of them. :)
I can't swing a 50K car of any flavor or fuel, so you guys let me know when you have a lightly-used, heavily-depreciated one for sale.

Am I the only one who thought "Tesla Model" was going to be a hot chic?
