View Full Version : Thinking of flying to FL... how much to take dogs?

My parents want to pay for me to fly to FL for a couple of weeks, but I want to take my dogs.

Barkley weights about 170lbs and the little guy is about 15 pounds. I have travel crates for both of them and can't get one damn representative on the phone for any of the air lines around here to tell me how much $$$ it will cost.

Anybody know how I can find out without being put on hold for two days? Internet was just as useless trying to get this info.

Declare them service dogs and take them on the plane with you. Post pics of Barkley sitting on your lap.

ehh... no. He weighs too much. That would be as uncomfortable as getting a lap dance from a heffalump.
Besides... he takes up at least two seats.

Have him eat a few crying babies. The passengers will cheer.

I found this (http://www.delta.com/planning_reservations/special_travel_needs/pet_travel_information/pet_requirements_restrictions/index.jsp) on Delta's web site. Looks like they are not currently accepting pets as checked baggage due to the summer heat.

No checked baggage, but cargo is cool so far.

Pets may be shipped as cargo. See below for year-round temperature restrictions including live birds and snub-nosed breeds.

Just got a rep on the phone and she says she can help me with fare, but not cargo prices. Cargo is saying that my dogs may have to go on a different flight and it looks like Delta won't be getting my money.

Wow... all the carriers here are out of their fricken minds just for air far. It's 2/3rd the cost to drive my truck and stay in a hotel one night.

Seriously, if time isn't a big factor, I would definitely drive.

Yeah, probably best. I could also bring back the sail boat I was supposed to get last year.

win, win.

See if you can find a number for the air freight office, they should be able to give you real numbers. Where in FL?

Leaving from Texas, this time of year - the heat may be a factor. Airlines won't transport if the temperature is above 85 degrees at any point on the route.

they are out of their freaking minds for cargo, plus here in Killeen it looks like there's nothing big enough for Barkley to fit into. I tried some stuff out of Austin, but damn, I'm not willing to pay those prices. Looks like there's a road trip coming up and I'll stop off at Tindall AFB (Panama City area) where my brother is stationed.

Nah, have you seen how UPS handles packages? I don't want two broken dogs when I get to FL.

I'm cheap. i think i'll drive anyway and pull the sailboat back my dad wants to give me. It's a 22' Catalina and I hope my truck can pull it over the bridge in Laffeyette or Baton Rouge (???) that crosses the Mississippi River.

22 Catalina probably has a swing keel...piece of cake to pull.

a sail boat w/ a fixed keel sits high on the trailer...depending on the truck, it could get dicey.

Swing keel. It's the weight I'm worried about. I have a 2010 Explorer Sport trac with the towing package and the 4.0 motor, but I'm not sure exactly how much stress I can put on the transmission. I think it's made in China, after all.... Oh well, it's still under warranty, the boat's not going to be over the weight limit, and Ford will reimburse me for hotel if needed.

I think you will be fine.

Yeah, I use it to pull a huge enclosed trailer with 6 ATVs, various other items, and all the tools we have for the shriners. It's a huge box with no aerodynamic qualities and the truck pulls it along at 65-70MPH between 2200-2500 RPM. Gas mileage goes to shit, but the temp guage never seems to move up or down.

I'll be spending most of my time in Orange Park where my parents live. Aren't you somewhere in that area?
