BURKE COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - Burke County Sheriff John McDevitt has been in law enforcement for 37 years, but he experienced something on Wednesday for the very first time in his long career.

McDevitt was involved in a high-speed chase.

"That's the first time I've ever been outrun," the sheriff said.

The whole thing began as the sheriff and other officers were doing some surveillance. All of a sudden, a motorcycle went flying by them, putting other cars on the road in danger.

Lt. Tom Rhyne went after the motorcyclist, but the chase was too intense for his patrol car to keep up.

The sheriff, however, drives a Dodge Charger which has a Hemi engine. McDevitt passed Rhyne and tried to catch up to the motorcycle on Highway 64 as it headed South.

The sheriff stayed within sight of the motorcycle giving his speedometer a workout.

"I reached 150 at one point," the sheriff said.

The video from a local fire station showed the motorcycle going by so fast, it was hard to make out the make, model or even the tag number.

The sheriff just about caught him when they hit a line of traffic. The motorcycle slipped on through, but the sheriff could not.

"Once he was able to weave through that stopped traffic I couldn't catch up," McDevitt said.

The 10-mile chase was over at that point. Officials say the motorcyclist needs to be stopped or else he'll speed like that again.

All authorities say is that the motorcycle appeared to be a dark colored bike, probably black, and the driver wore darker clothes and a lighter colored helmet.

The biker weaved in and out of traffic and crossed yellow lines.

Sheriff McDevitt, who will leave office at the end of the month, said he is frustrated and hopes the culprit can be caught before he retires.

"Eventually it will catch up with him and he'll become a statistic," the sheriff said.

They just hope he doesn't take anyone with him. Officials still don't know why the motorcyclist ignored the blue lights and refused to stop.

When I lived in very rural Alabama, our county had three constables. They drove those old Chrysler K cars, I believe they were called "Reliants". Anyway, those cars topped out at like 70 mph. I had a Yamaha Radian, we use to haul ass past them and try to get them to chase us. They did many times and never caught us.

That's a good one......putting cars around him in danger! He'll be the one splattered like a bug on a windshield. And radios are great until he's off at the closest exit, and hides. Choppers work better. Remember all the chopper videos of bikers getting smushed at the end of a chase? :slap:

My brother was in pursuit of a crotch rocket on the interstate a few years ago. They were just about to break off due to safety concerns when the guy decided to take the off ramp. He hit the curb at the end of the ramp at high speed and my brother saw taillight, headlight, taillight, headlight about 20 times. He tried to hide in a pickup bed but they saw him climb in.

I had a Galveston County Sheriff almost knock the front passenger fender off the car I was riding in while coming back from Galveston last year. We saw him hiding behind a tree next to the feeder road, and he rocketed from behind the tree, over the curb, through 3 lanes of frontage road and 2 lanes of I-45 to nearly clip us and chase down a motorcycle that couldn't have been doing much over 15 over. (We were doing 8-10 over and he passed us slowly).

Back in the early 70's me and another guy were riding our KZ-900's up to East Texas. It was late at night and we were on Highway 59 about 80 miles north of Houston. We were doing about 90 when we caught the door decal of a State Trooper's car. We whipped past him and he pulled out and turned on his lights, I started to slow down but my Buddy downshifted and started accelerating.
Being the dumbass I am I did too. I was leaned over about 50 yards behind my buddy doing 160+ we held that speed about 5 minutes, the flashing lights got smaller and smaller behind us and eventually stopped.
By then we were about 10 miles from his parents house, we headed down some country roads and made it to his folk's house.
3 Days later we were heading back South and went past the same place about the same time at night. This time we were doing the speed limit. The dude pulled out and followed us all the way to Lake Livingston.
