Yeah, I was in California when I heard my home town was hit by a big ass tornado. Took me about 24 hours to get back home. My mom's house is gone, we're going for final salvage tomorrow morning. My brother came up from Arkansas to help out while we were travelling. So much devastation, the worst fatality count in something like 60 years. I'm safe, my home is safe, we even have all utilities including interweb. My mom's dog rode out the storm under her computer desk, she was at church so her car is OK too. Many of our friends lost everything. I'm talking a backpack full of stuff is all they have. You can't even salvage clothing because it's embedded with crushed glass and stuff. I'll keep you guys informed.

Awful. Just awful. Sometimes Mother Nature can be a real bitch.
Some days you just want to pack up and move to Arizona or New Mexico.
Then you remember, they get hit by the occasional asteroid.
If you personally know of any good "friends helping friends" type of group for donations - stuff, money - let us know.

If anyone wants to help via a reputable charitable organization, World Vision International's just a click away.
World Vision International - Home (http://www.wvi.org/wvi/wviweb.nsf)
World Vision's domestic relief team has been dispatched to Joplin, Missouri, after a deadly tornado left nearly one-third of the town completely destroyed.
More than 100 people have been killed, and many survivors are displaced after their homes crumbled in the storm. World Vision will assess the damage and work with churches and other local partners to begin emergency relief operations.

For those that want to help:
- Donate to a reputable organization: Red Cross, your local churches going to help, etc
- If you're close and have skills, tools, volunteer to clear debris and help families save pieces of their lives. Chainsaws, electricians, plumbers, construction, heavy equipment, etc. These are all needed desperately. As are medical personnel.
- Food, water, clothing, shelter are all things these folks need.
- Pray for those people and their families
- Stay away from the area if you're not there to help. Gawkers slow things down.
Just because you cannot get there or have the skills to help, doesn't mean you can't help. A tornado literally turns your life upside down and spins it around. Just knowing they have a support system can make a huge difference.
Up here, neighbors took in neighbors, providing hotels, helped find temporary living quarters, provided food... but most importantly, provided a sense of normalcy and a bit of compassion.

Well, my mom has got in touch with her insurance company and started that claim process, and is now on the phone with FEMA. As soon as she's done talking to them we're going to go to her house and try to get a few things, hopefully, and then I'm going to buy her a laptop, clothes, makeup, stuff she needs. I haven't been to the devastated areas yet, I almost dread going out this morning. I'll post up some pictures later, but you've probably all seen them on TV. My mother worked at that hospital you keep seeing on TV, St. Johns. Her boss sent her a text message, kind of tongue-in-cheek, that said "Notice: Work is cancelled today". Yeah, um, her office building is missing. Her house is gone, and she worked at home for them too sometimes.
From the sounds of it, FEMA will help you if you are a deadbeat who never bothered to buy insurance but it sure would be nice if they would give Mom a few bucks as she has absolutely nothing.

Man, sorry to hear of this. It brings back memories-all bad.
Thankfully, your Mom is OK.
Regarding FEMA-you are mostly correct, but:
They have the ability to grant immediate, cash assistance. (usually $2500).
Also, once things settle a bit, they can grant low-interest loans. (which may be forgiven)
All you need to qualify is copies of tax returns (which can be provided by IRS).
They can also provide housing assistance (hotel rooms, per diem, etc).
With FEMA, the better off you were before (real taxpayer with a job) the better they are able to make you whole. It's the knuckleheads that work on a "cash" basis that can't be helped.
Best of luck and our thought prayers are with you and your family.

:sadangel: So sad, such destruction. An f1 hit my parents farm when they came thru Alabama a couple of weeks ago...and an f4 missed them by 10 miles. There are still a couple dozen people in the Rainsville morgue that haven't been identified (probably illegals). This is the worst tornado season in a long time. Tough to live through an f4 unless you are underground.

**** more storms coming soon. This day has sucked so bad I can't even begin to tell you how much it sucked. People are really being cool to each other though, lots of people helping out, but THIS SUCKS SO ****ING BAD!
I'm hearing this was the 8th deadliest tornado on record, and a bunch of people are still missing. The town, of which I've seen about 1 to 2% of, is utterly and completely ****ED. Pardon my language, but that's what it is. We are going to have to bulldoze the entire center of the town, about four square miles maybe more.
I have pictures, may as well get them up now before we get hit again tonight. It wouldn't surprise me in the least that another monster just finishes us off. Apparently we aren't liked by Mother Nature.

Yah, that's pretty much the situation...
I have barely even touched on the damaged areas. Literally maybe 1 or 2% total I have seen. I just don't have any reason to venture even near places like St. John's hospital, because there is no good reason to go there...for me. You automatically know in your heart that you can't interfere with the recovery effort. If you aren't helping, STAY OUT! I felt a bit guilty even deviating a couple of blocks and taking pictures of Main Street, which appear in some of the pictures here in this thread.

For a long time, no matter how much you clear, you'll feel like you're not doing jack. More just like shifting debris around, but those efforts DO help.
Your family is safe. Homes and things can be replaced and rebuilt. Glad your family is safe and I'm sure your efforts are VERY much appreciated.

Nothing can burn here, we've had something like 16 inches of rain in the last few days. When we were out salvaging my mother's stuff we had people practically forcing water and food on us. At first I was waving them off, explaining that we were fine and had plenty of supplies. Eventually I just said "OK, how about a banana and a water." Some chick gave me a cheeseburger. It was then I realized that I really did need to eat something, I had completely forgot to eat all day. Was glad that I brought a few beers with me though, they came in real handy.

Also when I was out in California, in the very brief time I was actually on vacation before hightailing it back here, I met a gentleman from Georgia at a winery event. He remembered that we were from Joplin when hearing of this disaster, and through the winery contacted us. His wife is the owner (I think) of a big peanut operation and they are going to send up a truckload of peanut butter to Joplin. We asked them to get in touch with a local radio station here, KZRG, because they have been acting as the defacto information outlet for this disaster and can hook them up with the right people to get it distributed.
I thought that was very nice of them, and this sort of thing is happening at an unbelievable rate. So thanks again to Birdsong Peanuts, you are very kind folks.

Relatively to others, I guess you and yours were lucky, and at least your ma has somewhere to go, and not in a shelter. Best of luck.
Crass question, but are most of these losses insured, and how fast will it be to rebuild, and get compensated?
:sadangel:for the lost ones, and all the animals too.....
In my mother's case, yes she is insured. We're meeting the adjuster later today, but mom is currently in a very long line to get a permit to enter the devastated area. Yesterday we could go anywhere (assuming you could get there) but today you are only allowed into areas you have a reason to be in.
I'm sure there are plenty of uninsured people who lost everything, especially those who rent. I know one of my mom's neighbors is in this category, she was going to purchase renter's insurance Monday, one day too late as it turns out.

American Family Insurance is pretty damn awesome, that's all I can tell you. They cut mom 2 checks, one that pays off her mortgages (oh yes, two...), and one that covers the contents. She had zero equity of course (you'd have to know her) and they gave her maximum content valuation which was a nice check. Plus they will pay the difference between her old mortgage payments and what it costs to move somewhere else for the time being (not sure how long, probably a year at most...)
Still a long way to go to get her life back together but she will be OK I think. I'm about exhausted though.

Dang, I can't even identify this area. Must be on Rangeline, a road I haven't tried to go down yet because, although it is now open in theory, it takes about 2 hours to drive 25 blocks on it because of the traffic and congestion from the rescue/cleanup effort. I woke up last night haunted by some of what I saw yesterday in that last batch of pictures by St. Johns and surrounding area. You just have to see it for yourself, and you kind of just lose hope. It's awfully hard to stay optimistic right now.
We remembered a few more people we know that were in the path once we saw how far west the destruction started. Got in touch with all of them, they are OK, their pets are OK, but like my mom they lost everything. Then for some odd reason I thought about the Elks Lodge. I'm not a member but a bunch of people I know are and I've been there many times. It was always too smoky for my tastes but I imagine it's adequately aired out now, seeing it was about four blocks northwest of St. Johns. Funny what you think of.
Cybercowboy
05-26-2011, 11:33am
Oh, wow. Heard that four people died at the Elks Lodge and good friends of ours Jamie and Lloyd were there when it hit. Lloyd is the president (or whatever his title) of the lodge. Jamie, a skinny little thing, has three broken ribs and a punctured lung. No word if Lloyd was injured but that building is just one of thousands that it totally destroyed.
I can't seem to drag myself out of the house today.
Most people I talk to think the vast majority of the 1200-1500 missing people are not fatalities but simply displaced people who other's can't get in touch with even though they are fine. The cell service is terrible here still and it's possible that a lot of these folks never even had a cell phone anyway. I know a bunch of people have just left town to go stay with relatives, even one that just abandoned her remaining belongings even though much would be salvageable (possibly) because she just couldn't deal.

Donations and support is pouring in. My wife just took a bunch of my clothes that I don't wear anymore but are perfectly fine over to a distribution center. As far as where to donate, the Salvation Army is great here. Here's how to donate to them.
Kirksville, Mo. —
The Salvation Army has begun a text-to-donate campaign to support relief efforts in tornado-striken Joplin.
Cell phone users may text the word JOPLIN to 80888 to make a $10 donation. Credit card donations can also be made by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY or by visiting salvationarmyuse.org (http://www.salvationarmyuse.org).
Checks may be mailed to The Salvation Army at 3637 Broadway, Kansas City, Mo., 64111. Please designate the donation “Joplin Tornado.”
At this time, in-kind donations are not being accepted due to easier and more immediate assistance financial donations provide.
The Salvation Army currently has four mobile feeding kitchens stationed in Joplin, each capable of serving several thousand meals.
The Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network also arrived in Joplin today to assist survivors in locating loved ones through a ham radio network. In Reading, Kan., which was struck by a tornado late Saturday night, the Salvation Army is serving hundreds of meals per day from two mobile feeding kitchens.

These pictures start with a house that I used to live in about 14 years ago that was lightly damaged, then over to the area around Joplin High School (which is destroyed) and some vista pictures there since it is high ground sort of, then on past Dillons Grocery store which is gone, lots of apartment buildings where they are still pulling bodies out (the death toll will be far higher than what is currently reported), then down to 20th and Rangeline where Home Depot, Academy Sports, and Wal-Mart Supercenter was, along with many other businesses.

Lisa I drove to a friend's house yesterday and drove across the path of the EF5 that went through Madison County (NOT an EF5 at that time tho)... saw a neighborhood just destroyed and things burning. It made me sick and weak and I had to pull over. It was less than 1/2 mile from his house. He and his family were all okay though. Never mentioned just how close it was to him.
I know exactly what you're feeling.

Just a little update. When we were on vacation in California, the one day we were there before having to fly back in emergency mode, I met a guy from Georgia and we chatted for a bit at a Trefethen Vineyard party Sunday May 22 (the day of the twister...) Never thought I'd see him again, we found out about the tornado on our drive back from the party and it took us another 24 hours to make it back home.
Well this gentleman remembered that we were from Joplin, contacted the vineyard, and they tracked us down using our shipping information. He contacted us and said that his wife owns a peanut processing company in Georgia and that they were planning on bringing a tractor trailer full of peanut butter and other items for the victims of the tornado. And guess what? They came through and will be here tomorrow after stopping off in Grove OK (another tornado-affected area) and are bringing pallets of peanut butter, a grill to make grilled peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for relief workers, and a bunch of other stuff including special gift packs for summer school kids (since the schools were really messed up, all R8 students have to go to summer school later to actually graduate...) I'm going to meet up with them and help out, that is really pretty cool of them dontcha think?
