KIAWAH, SC - Two Mount Pleasant teens are facing burglary charges after skipping school to go on a crime spree on Kiawah Island last January, authorities say.
The Charleston County Sheriff's Office has filed first and numerous second-degree burglary charges against 18-year-old William Heyward McCants and 17-year-old Isaac David Waters.
According to Deputy Nick Wagner, the boys planned to skip school on January 28 in order to attend a friend's funeral. Instead, they opted for a day at Kiawah Island, where authorities say they drank alcohol and burglarized several homes in Waters' father's neighborhood.
Wagner said McCants, a First Baptist student, and Waters, a Porter-Gaud student, took over $132,000 worth of jewelry and coins from the home of Waters' father. He will not be pressing charges.
Wagner also said that the boys drove around the neighborhood in a Land Rover, before taking a break and resuming in Waters' father's Range Rover.
$54,000 worth of property was stolen from the 5 victims pressing charges and the boys hit the Gold and Diamond Exchange on the next day, McCants' birthday, and walked out with $6,000 in cash, a $9,000 check, and a Rolex.
Authorities say the boys also took 3 sets of golf clubs to Edwin Watts golf shop in exchange for a nicer set and cash.
Wagner said Waters' father told him that his son was so drunk that when he returned to the home on Kiawah that day, he just tossed him the keys.
The father also told authorities that he found a gun and other stolen property in the Range Rover.
Fingerprint testing resulted in matching Waters to one of the crime scenes, and he was arrested on April 28 and released on bond, authorities said.
Arrest warrants indicate that Waters snitched on McCants, who was arrested on Thursday. He is being held in the Cannon Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in bond court on Friday.
