grr

a couple of people have voiced in a thread that this avatar offends certain sensibilities and that I "cross the line" with it.

(there is NO pink (or shade thereof) in the orig. pic)

Well, I can't vote in the poll, because none of the answers reflects my opinion.

Do I like the avatar? Uh, YEAH!

Do I think it is your God given right as an American and VB'er to use that pic as an avatar? Again, yes.

However, if folks are having a legitimate concern about computer Nazis at their workplaces taking umbrage with the avatar, then I would say disgression is the better part of valor and you should find a photo of that very hot girl that has a bit more coverage.

Think of it like holding the door open for someone else. No, you don't have to, and yes, you could just let it shut behind you, but it is a class move to go ahead and keep it open for the next person.

If no one has expressed concerns to you personally, then I say let it all hang out.

I just don't understand what the need is to use a pic of woman that isn't yours, doesn't really reflect who you are (avatars I thought were a reflection of you and or something personal) or is only there to say hey look, I can download a pic of a half naked lady. :bilmem:

I've seen enough boobs in my lifetime and I'm sure you have too that I don't need to see it as an avatar but do as you want, it has nothing to do with me.

I'm not offended, it doesn't do anything for me, but it certainly doesn't offend me.

For me, avatars are what I remember the most about a member, Joecooool's is him holding his wife's boobs, that's how I recognize him, Data's is the cone monster, DJ's his military stripes, etc, yours is just another set of boobs on a woman, no different than the other 20 or so avatars of other members.

And that's why I asked you what yours was of, getting to know people who you in a way spend time with is what forums are about. I now know that you made those knives, they're personal and it's something that you do, I now know a little more about you, a set of tits tells me nothing unless you're a plastic surgeon. Although some people use pics that don't mean a thing they usually stick with them and once again that's how I remember the person. Thud for instance is of the Farside kid pushing the door that says pull.

Yep.

I believe in peeps making their own choices and living with the consequences. Enough nanny state stuff. Get enough in real life. If enough send a PM then the recipient can gauge if his approach is having the intended effect. Life is too short to bitch about small stuff.

So you're with Thud's kid?? :hide: :D

Life's too short to sweat the small stuff, do what you want but it's your actions that people often remember you by.

I voted keep it, that is, if you like it.

It does not offend me and should not offend anyone but a prude since it shows no frontal or lower nudity.

(avatars I thought were a reflection of you and or something personal)

In a way Monk is right, it is a reflection of you.

Some change them so often I have to slow down to see who the poster still is.

Sometimes i have made mental judgements without thinking, and without knowing anything about the poster.

Some Avatars say mean, some gay, some are too political, some just say nerd, some asshat. or sometimes even IDGAF..

But often though time I have found that my first impression was wrong after getting to know the person better by reading their post over time.

Anyone else guilty of that?

You are the only one that should make that decision. Remember that people on these forums are from all over the place people who live in different parts of the USA have different moral standards. Take for example Pete :D he has no standards in California nor do I in Fl. but someone in Mo or Miss. might have that bible belt mentality. Remember that in 2012 there are still dry counties in the USA. I would remove it so this forum does not get blocked at someones work place.

You can't please everybody, so please yourself instead. As previously stated, my avatar represents societies wishes for me......bigger boobs from one half, and a bigger waistline from the other (this is just my life experience, for some reason, many feel the need to comment to me about my size.....I often wonder if I were overweight if they would say "Gosh, you make me feel bad about myself because you are so FAT!:confused5:). I yam what I yam!

I don't mind when avatars change. I like to see different pictures. I like change. And I don't see the problem with Joecooool's avatar. Is it only okay to view pics of the scantily clad as long as you don't know them??? As I see it, those who have a problem with it only do so because they know they can't....and she can! Whatever you do, have fun!

I think OP did the right thing. The avatar didn't offend me in the least, but we're not supposed to post nude pics here, and I consider nipples as nudity. We're all given considerable latitude, but I don't want to be so flagrant about it that we lose those privileges by abusing them. It's a reasonable "rule" about nudity, and I don't think it hurts any of us. Gawd knows, some of our avatars would never be tolerated at the other place and at lots of other sites. Mine was promptly taken down at CF.

I found that turning them off was distracting because I had to keep looking at the name to know who said what. I get used to the avatars. It's just easier to stick to sites with less provocative pictures. It's not that big of a deal, just giving my $.02.

I think there are plenty of people here that think it is a big deal that you don't participate more because of some taking things to the limit and over.

I understand having to look at names being distracting...I'm the same way but I don't have kids looking over my shoulder and am able to click away in time at the office to not worry.

Good point, I have said it before, I don't really care about what the AV is, but if we police ourselves and stick to the rules then the mods don't have to start acting like they did at the other place

I don't think it is just BB that feels this way, I am sure there are family guys who don't come to the barn as often as they would like because they don't want their kids seeing boobs and whatever else even if it is an AV...and some may not be aware that they can turn off the AV

I am also curious about her comment on this being a guy based forum if the opinion would be almost 100% for taking it down if one of the ladies posted a guy in a mesh see though bathing suit.

Unfortunately, I've had to extremely visit my Barn Time because of the avatars. I've got kids running around and I'd prefer they not see tits every time they run by. However, as I've been informed, this is a guy based forum and it seems to get along just fine without me.

You were informed incorrectly. To be accurate...this is an ADULT site. Women are just as welcome as men and we do not encourage participation by those under 18. However, I think that I should point out that your participation at VB was sporadic even before more...shall we say..."scantily clad avatars" started appearing. That's not to say we wouldn't love to have you here more, but let's be realistic Michelle. You post for a day and then you're not heard from for a month.

I had young children for a long time too, and when I was on a site that I didn't want them to see, I either used the computer in another room or told the kids to go away. If they'd ask why, I said that there were things I was looking at on the computer that were not appropriate for them yet.

We're walking a fine line here. On one hand, I would agree that some of the avatars have probably crossed the line. On the other hand, we all saw how Jesse's "Family Friendly" bullshit turned CF into an E-retirement home, and I think the majority of people on this site enjoy the absence of heavy-handed moderation.

Not being a smart azz...but did you know you can turn them off?(

For now, this is the best compromise. To say that it's too much work to avert your eyes for three seconds to read a name is...well...a little silly. In the long run, we'll have to look into the software to see if we can allow members an option to selectively turn off avatars.

Doesn’t really matter what kind of a pic it is now does it? It’s a little disingenuous to complain about a situation one day, then add to that same situation the next. If you ain’t no angel, thats fine. Go have your fun and let everyone else have theirs. That's what VB is all about.

The geniuses at CF would allow the forum to be held hostage by one or two people complaining. I can't tell you how many times I heard “If you don’t change this...I’m leaving!” And more often than not, the people who complained the loudest were usually the infrequent posters. Rules were re-written or just made up on the fly to keep a small handful of people happy.

And we all know how well that has worked out.

No, let's get this straight. My original participation here had been sporadic because the board was slow, most of the people were still on CF AND the avatars were racy. They may have gotten racier, but I personally informed you MONTHS ago on the way to dinner with Gozar that I had a problem with my kids viewing the avatars. That's when you pointed out that this is a male dominated forum, to which I agreed, because it is! I no longer participate in this forum when my kids are around and have found other sites and things to occupy the time that I used to spend on CF - which was no doubt too much anyway.

It goes a little beyond a chick in a bikini and just because my kids will see things doesn't mean I have to approve of it. When it comes to my kids, I am a prude. Sure, they probably have and surely will see racy images on the computer, but I want them to know thatI, as their mother, don't condone it. I only have a few years to instill the values I want for them into them so I take it seriously.

I didn't vote in the poll because I don't think it's up to me to decide who's avatar is appropriate and who's isn't. This is all getting a little silly...

Joecoool & his wife should have more mutual respect for each other, than use such a pic as his avatar. IMO. However, It does not offend me at all. matter of fact, I think his wife is an attractive woman.
