I've been thinking that with the introduction of AI, scammers are only going to get smarter and be able to hack and get your credit info. I'm also thinking about freezing my credit at the 3 reporting agencies.

But for those using Life Lock, what does that cost you per month? Are there better companies than Life Lock? Is simply freezing your credit is good enough?

Why wouldnt the credit card companies offer that for free & save themselves from paying for credit card fraud ?

I freeze my own.

Best part is forgetting you froze it. Then do some bank thing like I did or a car purchase and comes up denied because they run a check and denied. I did that a few times over the years.

I just get online and undo it and all was fine.

Same thing here, I freeze my credit score/history accounts when I'm not expecting to make a purchase. The only thing that I open them up for is my insurance review once a year and them lock them down again.

Wife and I have been using Identity Guard (https://www.identityguard.com/) for almost 20 years. Signed on via Costco at first. Costco changed their provider, but we kept it. We pay $8.59 a month for the Standard Identity & Credit Protection plan, which has not changed in 20 years. I see it's $16.67 a month now.

Why are you going to pay for lifelock when you can freeze your credit reports for free?

Like paying someone to do your taxes when you take the standard deduction

OK so you freeze your credit - what happens when one of your credit cards is due to expire. Do you have to unfreeze your credit?

If you do, it ain’t that hard. So I don’t get the question.

That happened to me with my Discover card, they offered it for free, don't remember how it works actually. I'd completely forgotten that I'd done it.

So I bought a new truck last month and used the card for a deposit. A few minutes later the dealer guy told me it was frozen. We tried to unfreeze it over the phone with Discover but couldn't get hooked into the right person.

We finally did the next day.

No, only if you are applying for a new/different card. I had a fraud thing and gave me a new card without issue but if you want some rewards card or something, you may need to unfreeze.

Its nothing serious to manage

I don't have LifeLock but my credit files are frozen as my SSN is on the dark web. Whenever I apply for credit, I unfreeze and immediately after, I freeze it again with all 3 bureaus.

That was not a credit freeze if your card Discover card got declined. That was something else.

Friend has it, a PITA, it locks his card down at times and its a whole identification effort to get it unlocked. You DO know that nearly every credit card provides protection on unauthorized purchases if you report them promptly - read the fine print.

You can also set personal alerts on debit/CC card expenditures. I get a text if anything over $500 is charged - immediately.. I set that limit but its adjustable.

I signed up for it last year after one of the big data breaches. Won’t do it again this year. It’s just one more place that can get hacked and expose your info. Just freeze your credit with the 3 agencies and hope for the best.

No need for a monthly subscription service and fees. Just lock your credit with all three agencies. It may take you a couple of hours, they don't like to make it easy for you, but by law it is free.

Just don't lose the passwords- there is no way to recover them.

I have mine set for $1, a lot of times the thieves will try a small purchase, like $1 a gas pump. That will also set off a fraud flag at the CC companies.

Definitely. If someone showed up and said they own my house I would just walk away. I wouldn't tell them to pound sand or call the county courthouse or exercise any common sense whatsoever. I'm sure the mortgage company would be fine with not having the house as collateral anymore either.

At best, LifeLock cannot prevent fraud - it can only alert you after the fact.

Save your money and get a credit freeze, which will prevent scammers from opening any new accounts in your name.

:iagree:

Someone is unclear on yet another concept. :D

Either Bruze was over his credit limit, or Discover's fraud detection algorithm saw something suss in that transaction and declined it. :yesnod:
