My 20 year old siding was looking bad. Lots of mold spots under the stain. Once I built the addition the old stuff stuck out like a sore thumb. So I'm having it sanded down to start fresh.

1. 60 grit on a 1/4 sheet pad sander.
2. Chlorine wash, rinse.
3. One coat of Cabot's Australian Oil (for rich color).
4. One coast of Cabot's Gold (for a final sheen).

This represents about 6 man hours:

The color on the addition is nice. The whole place will look great that color.

I did my first dose of this late last year (instructions says do it twice). Didn't do much to make a dent in it. Planning on a 2nd dose when the siding is done and I reinstall the gutters.

Have you had good luck with Wet and Forget?

I agree, but it will be darker. To hide color variations from sanding.

Stain it with diesel and used motor oil. You'll never need to restain.

Twenty years ago Mexican subcontractors arrived in third tier compacts, ate their lunch out of a grocery bag, and spoke almost no English.

Ten years ago Mexican subcontractors arrived in third tier pickups, cooked their lunch on site with an old hot plate or microwave, and one of crew spoke broken English.

Now Mexican subcontractors arrive in second tier pickups, eat their lunch at Subway or China Buffet, one of crew speaks conversational English, and almost all speak some English- most very well. Oh, and they're getting fat like naturally born Americans. :Jeff '79:

What is that building, the slave quarters on your estate or something? I guess I can see why you need a driveway rock after all...

I have never liked that kind of stuff. What worked great for me was a low pressure power washer and simple green in the soap dispenser.

I'm considering that for the garage-apartment.

That means that I have to climb on the roof. :(

I feel off the top of a six foot step ladder about ten years ago. I was on the top step, holding onto a deck railing with my left hand, a paint brush in my left. Balanced- stupid. I was on the ground before I knew that I had fallen.

Reaction times aren't what they used to be.

I'm doing Cabot's Gold over it. So that will be reapplied.

I like the cedar shake. I wanted to do my home with real cedar shake, the quote was $120,000 ( included the soffits and trim) way over my budget. Such a nice look. The Adirondack chairs finish the look nicely?

The siding is actually a composite product: 1/4" plywood with a thick cedar veneer. It comes in 8' long panels with a 7" reveal. Installed with 1-5/8" stainless deck screws 16" on center along the top edge, which is then hidden by the next panel above it.

The price was reasonable back in 2005, kinda pricey when I did the addition. However I was able to reuse a lot of the stuff from the exterior wall that we partially demo'd.

I've done some work many decades ago on roofs with that sort of pitch....its a constant battle against gravity and momentum. I got chills even looking at that picture...

maybe 12 years ago I had a guy go up on the roof ( of house I sold) and spray it good with wet and forget...If memory serves me I remember it took around 1.5 to 2 months and all the black streaks disappeared.

I also used it on wood fences and that worked in minutes.
