Virginia's Lynchburg is best positioned against natural disasters, per Home Gnome rankings
Safest cities
1. Lynchburg, Virginia
2. Roanoke, Virginia
3. Auburn, Alabama
4. Alexandria, Virginia
5. Macon, Georgia (No. 1 in "Hazards Risk" category)
6. Bloomington, Indiana
7. Richmond, Virginia
8. Pittsburgh
9. Rochester, Minnesota
10.Round Rock, Texas
Good news, Virginia: You're one of the safest places in the US when it comes to natural disasters. At least some of the Old Dominion's cities are, anyway, according to a new assessment by Home Gnome. The home services site wanted to see which US cities were safest (or best prepped) when it comes to Mother Nature wreaking havoc, so it looked at nearly 500 cities across the nation, using metrics in five distinct categories: hazards risk, vulnerable populations, vulnerable infrastructure, evacuation transport, and response and recovery. The Virginia city of Lynchburg was found to be the best of the bunch in terms of natural-disaster safety and preparedness; the state boasts three other cities in the top 10 "safest" cities. Meanwhile, it's little surprise that earthquake- and wildfire-prone California claims five of the 10 most at-risk cities. Check out both lists:
Least-safe cities
1. Cicero, Illinois
2. Deerfield Beach, Florida
3. Largo, Florida (last in "Vulnerable Infrastructure" category)
4. Carson, California
5. El Monte, California
6. Pharr, Texas (last in "Vulnerable Populations" category)
7. Compton, California
8. Miami Gardens, Florida
9. South Gate, California
10.Hemet, California

I'd like to add Fort Myers, FL to the least safe city list based on that last 4-5 years of hurricane seasons. :willy:
Round Rock is ripe for a tornado.

Cicero? Is Al Capone still going to have Machine Gun Kelly shoot you with a Tommy Gun?

Least-safe cities
10.Hemet, California
My wife and I lived in Hemet from 1982-2015. When I moved there, it was a town full of retirees and lots of banks. Really a safe place to live, but that started to change in the early 2000's. The scum from LA started to move in and ruined a good town.
As for disasters, we have the Sana Winds and Earthquakes. There are several faults in this area around Hemet.

So having a high population density is unnatural? I concur, it's also unsafe however.

Ashville, NC was supposed to be real safe too...
I lived in Alexandria for years, two miles from historic Old Town, it would routinely flood out from Potomac overflow - so somebody is full of crap...

Deerfield Beach more than negates it by being a great oceanside community.
AGAIN, bad storms happen, build strong, take precautions, damage can be mitigated.

Hemet and San Jacinto are going to be completely flattened one day.

I was camping with my kids and wife in Big Bear in 1992. We were awaken by the big earthquake in Landers in the early morning. Sleeping on the ground, we all felt it. Then the 1000+ after shocks that followed.
Told the wife that it would be better if we pack up and leave due to all the after shocks. So I take a stroll to the head to take a leak. As I'm walking back, BAM! Big Bear quake hit. We were about 5 miles from the epicenter. It knocked me on the ground. As it was happening, the trees all around us sounded like tuning forks. Then when it stopped, we could hear all the rock slides and people screaming.
We had to stay put for several hours until we were allowed to leave. According to the sheriff, the only way out was through Big Bear. I had to drive dogging boulders on the road, and seeing the destruction in Big Bear.
Magnitude 7.6 near Landers and a magnitude 6.7 near Big Bear Lake.

Crime is unnatural though. Poisonous critters on the other hand are a product of mother nature and being bitten or stung by one of those qualifies as an unsafe disaster in my book.
Until Helene came the biggest problem we has here was Floridiots. Maybe she was from Floriduh too...

This is what I most pay attention to;
Subtract CA from the mix, and all the surrounding states are just 8% of the entire US population. :seasix:

All's not perfect in the land of flat, bugs, humidity, crazy heat and old gals slowly driving large sedans.

I used to work with a guy who auto-crossed vintage MG's. On the street, he drove his Crown Vic so slow and smooth I joked that he could get by with a balsa-wood U-joint. I made a bumper sticker and stuck it on his car, which went un-noticed for a week or two.
