View Full Version : Bought the wife a new car (new to her)

It's the 2nd time I bought a car for her in the last 3 months.. Bought her a Kia Niro EV in North Carolina in December and when I brought the car home, it was too small for her. (She only saw the pics and thought that the car was larger). So, I went car shopping again as well as trying to sell her Niro EV. Didn't have time due to going back and forth to Austria due to my dad passing. Finally had some time to find her a car that was big enough for her. It ended up being a 2023 Nissan Ariya (2023 model but sold first in 2024). Car still looks and drives like new.
It has cool features like panoramic moon roof and ProPilot, Nissans version of Autopilot. It's the Evolve+ trim..

Sad you couldn't come join us at Florida Cruise-In. Brooks' Plaid won the event. :yesnod:
I had so many things going on.. People were scheduled to look at the wife's Kia for sale, the kids wanted to go to Strawberry Festival, we were actively looking for a new car for her and I also had to collect rent on the first of the month. Over 1/3 of my income is rent and I collect the rent in cash and need to deposit it on the first of the month as my credit card statement is paid on the 2nd of the month and I need the money in the bank as otherwise, I wouldn't be able to pay the balance in full as I don't leave much money in the bank as I pay any extra money towards my remaining debt. So, I had wayyyyy too many things on my plate. I really wanted to race those cars and meet Brooks. Right now, my life is crazy and busy. I will have to go to Austria again soon as well. There is nothing that will beat a Model S Plaid without track prep UNLESS there is a LUCID Sapphire or a RIMAC Nevera.
As for electric vehicles, I would never go back to gas as daily driver. I remember the time when I had the F150 SuperCrew and the wife had a Grand Caravan, both averaging 17 - 18 mpg.. Our monthly gas expense was $700 for both cars and due to my access to free charging as well as a dirt cheap electric rate, our EV's cost me close to nothing to maintain.

Wife is not a fan of the minimalist interior and one screen does all on Teslas.
She wanted something a little more conventional. I offered her a Model Y or VW ID4 but she liked the Ariya better.. It is a super nice car..

Been there, done that, blessed to have a new job for the past year that pays PwC money without the PwC (80-120 hours a week...easy 40 now). Christ, I'm on the hunt for a side-hustle as I have so much time.

That the car sits high was actually one of the reasons why the wife wanted it. The Niro EV is too low for her.. She wants to sit up high..

There are lots of good reviews out there as well. Not everyone likes the same thing.. Car drives fantastic. Very smooth and suspension is good. It has a fairly good size battery, 92 kwh/87kwh usable which is bigger than the Model Y battery. Car is very similar in size to the Model Y.

It's also a bit of an optical illusion with the driveway pitch, the body panels and black fender flares.

That's a pain in the butt in my county as all Pet Hospitals are required to report a "OWNER" for any cat brought in for any reason and you get a annual bill for every pet you bring to a Pet Hospital. They also require Rabies vaccine. So, in front of government, any pet you bring in is yours.. Stupid rule. I know in places like Hawaii, they have a catch, neuter and release program.. My county doesn't have that.. They will tax you on an additional pet for each animal you bring to a Veterinarian.

Well, I should have known.. It was the last time I will buy anything for the wife without her being able to see it and drive one in person.
We were leaning towards the VW ID4 and even went to the local VW dealer to check them out but she liked that the Ariya was higher. It's probably the highest sitting electric SUV.
I personally think that the Ariya is the best looking electric SUV out there but I personally would still take a Tesla over it any time even though the Teslas are ugly in comparison. The Infotainment system on Tesla is many years ahead of any other brands. On the Ariya, it does not even have a charge limit setting where you can protect the battery to only charge to 80 or 90%. Unless you time your charge session to end before it is full, you have no way of preventing a 100% charge which adds stress to the battery and adds to degradation. Sure, there is a 100k mile /8yr warranty on the battery but I'd still be able to set a charge limit. From a looks perspective, especially the interior is super super nice compared to Tesla. It also has a pretty cool glass sunroof that can be completely covered up.
Another reason why I prefer Tesla is performance. The Ariya is not underpowered but it's lame compared to even the long range version of the Model Y. The Ariya is more expensive than the Model y when new. The one I bought was about $54k new, 1 year ago.. (sold new in February 2024)

They are giving the 2023-24 models away with $150/mo leases with like $1k down. 20k miles max (duh, 10k per year) but still-- that's essentially free transportation.

Not quite. The battery capacity is 91 kwh and the user gets 87 kwh, so there IS a 5% or so buffer BUT I doubt that ALL the buffer is at the top end of the battery. There may be a buffer at the bottom of the battery as well.
I would prefer to be able to charge to 80% when I want to.

For me it all comes down to lack of maintenance and cheap fueling cost.
I got a steal on that car.. It has a Clean Carfax, 1 owner vehicle and I paid less than 50% of the new price of the car and the car is barely 1 year old since first registered in 2/2024. It's like a brand new vehicle and still has that new car smell.

Lithium batteries have to be recycled by law! They never end up on landfills. I don't really care. What I do care about it that the battery on the Ariya has 8 yrs, 100k miles warranty which means it has 7 years remaining. Wife is never going to make it to 100k miles in those 7 years. So, no worries and I'm sure we won't keep the car past 100k miles. I have 150k miles warranty on my Plaid's battery and motors. Peace of mind. I certainly won't keep them out of battery warranty.

What system do you have when you're receiving the cash to make sure it's not counterfeit? Too late to pin it on one tenant by the time you make your bank deposit.
You have more legal recourse in Florida for a bad check.

If I was a long-term tenant in a trusted landlord relationship I'd expect my written check to satisfy the lease.... If this is the case and you want paid in greenbacks because you think my check will 'bounce' then so much for trust..
If nothing else its just good bookkeeping...and I want a receipt in case you drop dead and your wife decides to evict me for non-payment...

Of course, I tax every penny.. No receipts.. not needed as my tenants trust me.. All of them have been long term tenants.
I want cash.. Cash doesn't bounce when deposited.. Checks can..
3 of my properties are managed by a property manager. Those are deposited on the LLC's account. However, my 3 personal rentals, I'm the one who wants cash. There are many advantages to cash and I'm not going to discuss those here...
One of these things is not like the other...

I don't do a 'wink and nod' business with anybody....but its not my circus and not my monkey... Good luck.
It has been working out great for many years.

Conterfeiting is a lot less common than a bouncing check. In my lifetime, I have never seen counterfeit money.
Sounds like no system for detecting counterfeit cash.
What are the advantages of cash that you won't talk about here (if not tax)?
Zelle is safer and more efficient.
