View Full Version : Question for Y block (if any) guys....
I usually run SBC in my hot rods, but this 312 Y block in my '56 Merc runs so good Im leaving it stock. Can some one tell me what this canister on the front drivers side of the engine (in front of the oil filter) is?

Block Crankcase Breather Cover

I have not taken it apart yet. Does it have a filter or need servicing of any kind?

IDK, all that is before my time, but guessing it has a screen and filter something like this

Spin-on oil filter aftermarket. :hurray:
Fuel filter if on the fuel pump. The FE big blocks used it too.The breathing for the crankcase on this would be a vented oil fill cap up top and a road draft tube dumping under the rear of the oil pan.

That bolt running through it reminds me of the oil filter on the front end of my oil furnace.

It’s a Ford. Make that a 429 side oiler.

yeah a Y block usually has a road draft tube for crankcase ventilation; I'm assuming it could go through a filter housing before exiting for some modicum of smog control......does that have a tube coming out of the other side towards the ground? the act of driving draws the vapors out.
Y blocks are :cool1:
The only real problem they have, is sometimes they don't oil the rocker arm shafts well, but I think there are remedies for that, and along with today's good oil and frequent changes, it should never really be a problem.....in olden times people would not change, and the holes would get gummed up.

There are some guys that are experts on the Y block.

Yes..it has that tube. Ok, so now I know what it is, I noticed in the video of the Y block rebuild, that the engine did NOT have this set up put on it. I wonder if it can be eliminated?

This one is just gonna be a mild custom cruiser so the stock 312 Y block will be fine. Only performance upgrades are 4 barrel carb and electronic distributor. :yesnod:
