View Full Version : Son's team's project on its way to the moon

When the Intuitive Machines Nova-C lander launched to the Moon on February 26, 2025, its commercial payloads included two technologies that were advanced by NASA’s Flight Opportunities program: the Automated Radiation Measurement for Aerospace Safety, known as ARMAS, and a miniature rover called the AstroAnt. During Intuitive Machines’ second lunar delivery under NASA’s CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) initiative, these two innovations will carry out tasks that hold promise for better protecting people and equipment as we venture farther and stay longer in space.https://www.nasa.gov/stmd-flight-opportunities/transitions-of-flight-tested-technologies/flight-tested-technologies-for-safety-in-space-head-to-the-moon/

He doesn't work for NASA. He works for a private company that is an offshoot of MIT.

Miniaturization is where it's at. Imagine a flying drone about the size of a housefly, maneuvering itself into a terrorist's compound, flying up inside a terrorist's nose and lighting off a small but powerful bomb. That would literally make his head explode.

Meanwhile, Intuitive Machines’s lunar lander Athena was declared dead yesterday, 24 hours after reaching the moon but landing unintuitively on its side. NASA and other customers had sent pricey experiments up with the private moon lander.

Talked to my son recently about the landing. Dust picked up by extreme turbulence caused onboard sensors to return erratic data. The lander hit the surface with significant horizontal velocity, and basically had no chance to land upright. In fact, took several tumbles before it came to rest on its side.

The lander lacked satellite guidance, a critical component in a rocket assisted landing on a dusty surface. Future attempts by a competitor plan redundant satellites.

Unknown why this company was encouraged to make not just one, but two attempts, without satellite guidance.
