Years ago I was heavy into watches....I've slowed.....

Trying to get your hands on a New Rolex from a Authorized Rolex Dealer was next to impossible...Unless you had a purchase history north of 100k as an example. They'd insist you buy some other jewelry or different brands to build up your clout strength....

Yup a stupid game but they were in total control. I was able to form a relationship with two different dealers and they sold me several impossible to obtain references. Got a Leftie the first month they came out, wear this one every day.

Anyway, I got a call last night and then followed up by a bunch of texts from one of my dealers in NYC, right next to the Stock exchange. She was trying to unload a Platinum Daytona on me, a CPO one at that.....I easily passed.

What it says is that now they are no longer the ones in control and have come back begging to their old customers.

I called this some time ago, before getting booted of the Rolex Forum. So if you're into luxury watches NOW'S the time to buy!!!

Who needs a watch these days? Everyone is carrying one with their phone and there’s clocks everywhere. I know some like to wear them as jewelry and as an announcement of success but is often times an invitation for a Thief to pull it off of your wrist and endanger your life.

I bought myself a nice Victorinox Analog when I retired. $800. Thats as far as I go.

I don't do Chronographs or Digitals. If I do some time zone traveling, it takes 2 seconds to adjust vs screwing around for a 1/2 hour

With Chronographs, you only hope a woman will ask what those extra three circles are for because they are too small to see and be useful. Then you can tell her some bullshit line and if you're lucky, she'll be impressed and let you slide on her for a while

I have watch working tools so I just opened up the watches, noted the number on the cap, picked up a Panasonic off eBay for $18 or so, and just swapped in the new one. It pops in just like a coin battery, there is no soldering or anything of the sort.
The difficulty is entirely just on the part of opening the watch case, which depends on what tools you have available.

Had wanted a Tag Heuer, and then got one. Traded a bunch of airline points for it. 38mm. Too small for me. Wore it just a handful of times.

Also wanted an Omega. Actually picked up two when a jewelry store went out of business. A Planet Ocean and a "Bond" watch. Wore both of them for a while. Not at the same time, of course.

Stopped wearing watches altogether until last year, when I picked up an Apple Watch.

"watches are increasingly popular with younger men, with data showing that millennials and Gen Z are driving the luxury watch market, often purchasing more watches than older generations and spending a significant amount on them, especially on pre-owned luxury brands; this trend is attributed to factors like social media influence and the desire to express personal style through watches. A CPO Platty? How much did they want for it? They are still going for well over retail and CPO dealers can ask for whatever they feel like.

Rolex AD's are still selling every watch they get in. They aren't begging for customers to buy. The sports models are still especially in demand. The secondary market has come down some from the sky high prices they were going for a couple of years ago.

Too much going on with that dial for me. The simpler the better. I’m not a huge fan of the Daytona for this very reason. Too many complications ain’t my thing. For example, a Sub ‘two-liner’ is the perfect Sub.

Check out the Calatrava from Patek. Most of them are awesome. Nice, clean, simple dials.

I’m also one of them. Was required to wear a watch through flight school because of “how important it was”. Bought a $10 Walmart digital to get through. Took that shit off and never used one again. Just kept a timer on my knee board. The IP’s mostly had big baller stuff like in this thread. Jewelry is for chicks. Every aircraft I’ve flown had a timer/clock so I’d just use that. Worked with a Marine Corps guy that was always flailing his arm around to look at his watch even though the timer/clock is right in front of him on the instrument panel.

Burro (He/Haw)
03-06-2025, 10:34am
Some of you guys equate an expensive watch with baller status. Is this true? In some instances it is. There is no logical reason to spend four or five figures on a watch.

I’m no baller but I’ve been a WIS since I was a teenager, even before. I like mechanical things.

I can also tell you if you’re hoping someone will notice your Rolex you’ll be disappointed. I can count on one hand how many times this has happened to me. And if someone does comment you can usually tell within two minutes of polite conversation whether they’re a WIS or just some dude with a Rolex that has one for a flex.

When I worked I had a 5 dollar Timex that was battery driven but
the battery lasted years and years . I never changed it.
Now if I must wear a watch the Citizen Eco Drive is good because
I never change a battery or wind it. The only Swiss watch I have in a
drawer is a chronograpy Chase Durer Falcon Command watch and it is
old. Watchs were never a hobby for me. I usually look into a mans
eyes not his wrists. It is hard to impress me.

Nobody here is trying I assure you.

But you're impressed by a solar powered quartz watch, doesn't sound that hard to impress you. And since the shift from battery to capacitor is quite lateral, you will have to change it eventually, not never.

One thing I do know is if I had to meet one of you watch ballers for lunch at noon, my cheap ass dailiy Timex would get me there and on time. :D

I had a Snoopy watch as a kid. When I got older, my Grandpa bought me a Waltham watch. After that, my parents bought me a Seiko when I graduated from college, and my now ex bought me a Seiko while we were married.

I haven't worn any of them since it became commonplace to tote a cell phone everywhere.

And sadly, I'd need new bands now if I wanted to wear any of them, as they are too small for me now.

You can be anywhere on the planet and a Rolex means cash! In a catastrophic situation it’s very light, they can be hidden easily and then buy you out of a tight jam! Like having 25k at your ready!

That is probably the only fancy watch I would buy, not sure how often I would wear it.

I had a Mickey Mouse one I got at Disney world in 1975, who the heck knows what happened to it.

TRUE STORY:

Heard from another dood, his dood, not mine.
Was going to Roma for a vacay, went with wife and friends, was told not to bring jewelry or watches, he did so.
First night in town they finished a late dinner, he moved away from his group to have a smoke.
A local approached and asked it that was a Rolex, he smiled and said yes, local put a gun to his stomach, dood spent the rest of vacay not knowing the time.

Most women have enough balls to wear diamond rings worth 10's of thousands of dollars....How often do you hear of a stolen ring? Most people never even notice or know what a man's wearing or it's value. Yes some pro's do and yes you do read stories. Keep this in mind, there are millions and millions of Rolexes out there. Any smart person isn't going to advertise that they have a 50k watch on their wrist, unless in a safe location.

When first started wearing a luxury timepiece I was afraid, I was worried. Now 25 years later, it's not even a thought. You have to be aware of your surroundings just like any minute. And sometimes I'll bring along a 75.00 Seiko when I travel....Our last trip to Chile I didn't bring a Rolex, then found so many there that rocked a Rollie!.....
