One of my favourite actors. :sadangel:
Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed the news to local media just after midnight on Wednesday that the couple had died, along with their dog.

That would have been my first thought as well, but it doesn't explain the dog. The wife's death could be explained by him shedding spike proteins all over her during sex, but it still doesn't explain the dog. More research is needed.
Will probably put a new battery in my CO detector today.

Hackman, the wife and the dog? Holy mackerel! There can't be anything "natural" about those events.

I highly recommend NEST detectors. They are smoke/CO2 detectors. They have 10 year batteries and connect with each other and have an app.
RIP, loved his movies and 95 is a great run but watching the big stars of my childhood die off sucks. Better than the alternative, of course but that’s coming too. :)

Since you all are spreading it pretty thin.
He was sufferin and she put a bullet in him. Then you know how Asians feel about pets, took out the dog and offt herself without remorse.
I have two CO detectors. One in the Bedroom upstairs and one downstairs. A third one is a gas leak detector in the kitchen area. I write the date of purchase on them with a marker so I don't have to figure it out.
I usually replace after 3-4 years just for the hell of it regardless of life span.

We have 6 smoke/fire detectors in our home,2 are CO one in living room with fireplace and one in hallway between bedrooms.
That was my first thought when I heard they all were found dead. It's hard to believe that anyone would not have CO detectors in their home if they have natural gas or LPG appliances. :sadangel:

I would venture to say most older homes don't have CO detectors. My parents didn't even want smoke alarms because they go off when you burn stuff in the kitchen. I had to sneak a smoke/CO detector into their house.
If it ever beeps because the battery is low I'm sure they will disconnect it.

Great actor. Was just talking about his performances with a friend yesterday. Thinking co or some hind of poison. Had a couple locally in their 30's with their dog and toddler found dead on a park hiking trail and the verdict after months of mystery was ‘dehydration’. A stream was a mile away and they were about a half mile from the parking lot. Yeah, right.

I remember 20+ years ago Hackman made the news for kicking some guys ass in a barfight. He was 71 at the time and didn't start the altercation.

Reading a bunch of articles it says that Gene was found fully clothed in one part of the house, his wife in a bathroom and the dog near her. Two other dogs were just fine and wandering around. One mentioned front door was slightly ajar. They were found by maintenance workers who hadn't seen them in about two weeks. Most stories make it sound more like a gas leak/ CO2 issue than a suicide type deal, having found them in places where it looked like they were just going about their normal days...

Might have had those feeders where you dump a whole bag in the top of it and it gravity dispenses as needed. Or, they might want to check the people's toes. Heard dogs will chew on a toe to see if their person is alive before eating them....

I’m always amazed at how many people leave their doors unlocked. I’m sure many leave their doors ajar too. Too many people spend all their time watching drivel like reruns of Young Sheldon and not enough time watching true crime type programming which might clue them in about the reality of criminals and the harsh facts of life.

You wouldn't expect a forced entry or any items to be taken or rummaged in a suicide, would you?
Is suicide considered "foul play"? Or is the phrase "foul play" conflated with "external actor/perpetrator still at large"?

Well then there's three levels to be clear about-
Accidental death like unintentional CO from an unknown leak
Intentional death brought about by themselves onto themselves (suicide)
Intentional death brought about by other people, murder, (assuming the victims were not expecting it, not some kavorkian assistance deal)
Only the one with outside involvement is foul play, so how do you distinguish the first two?

I beleive the dog suffered the most, as it was in a crate and not fed or did it have water. The 2 other dogs were able to go out and get water and food, as door was open.
Gene died, natural causes, then she took her own life with pills as she was devastated. Thats my theory.

Maybe she shoved Gene to the ground which prompted a heart attack; then she took the dog she didn't like & locked in in a cage while committing suicide via pills.

I beleive the dog suffered the most, as it was in a crate and not fed or did it have water. The 2 other dogs were able to go out and get water and food, as door was open.
Gene died, natural causes, then she took her own life with pills as she was devastated. Thats my theory.
I don't agree, with all the $$ that she would have inherited why at her young age would she do that. Yeah his kids would be in on it too but she was still in line to get a lot I think.

Maybe she shoved Gene to the ground which prompted a heart attack; then she took the dog she didn't like & locked in in a cage while committing suicide via pills.

Obvious point but people who have tried (and failed) via pills have mentioned using that time after ingestion being fixated on staging how they'd be found. A lot of times this ends up representing what they've seen in movies or shows because they have no real world references. Dramatic staging, obvious scene for the police photographers, whatever, she had time for that if she in fact went out on purpose.

His wife was 30 years younger than him. He was 95 did she think he was going to leave forever. What an idiot she is.
What difference does the age gap make? My wife was half my age when we married. She knows I will die first ( unless of course we die because of her driving...).
We've got three dogs. Two stay out at night, but the third is old and pees everywhere if.not caged at night. Nobody yet knows what happened, but it could have been some sort of gas leak, fireplace venting issue or weird chemical dump in the area. Gene was going out in the morning to get the mail, wife taking her morning pills and preparing to let the pup out and they all got taken down at the same time by it, just in different places in the house.
Seems like they were a pretty good couple with the same interest in being away from people and left alone.

My first thought last week was 'wouldn't she be in bed?' Pills take time.
As for the gas or CO, I heard today that there was ZERO carbon monoxide or gasses in the blood of the couple AND the dog. So not CO poisoning.

Sounds like both Gene and the dog died from starvation after the wife keeled over and died. :sadangel::sadangel:
"Gene Hackman died of heart disease, his wife died of hantavirus about 1 week prior, authorities say"
SANTA FE, N.M. — Authorities revealed Friday that actor Gene Hackman died of heart disease and showed severe signs of Alzheimer’s disease a full week after his wife died of hantavirus in their home.
Authorities initially ruled out foul play after the bodies were discovered Feb 26. Immediate tests for carbon monoxide poisoning were negative.
Chief Medical Investigator Dr. Heather Jarrell said it was possible that Hackman was not aware his wife was deceased in their home.
“Mr. Hackman showed evidence of advanced Alzheimer’s disease,” Jarrell said. “He was in a very poor state of health. He had significant heart disease, and I think ultimately that’s what resulted in his death.”
Hackman, 95, was found in the home’s entryway. His death was tied to heart disease with Alzheimer’s disease contributing.
Betsy Arakawa, 65, was found with an open prescription bottle and pills scattered on the bathroom counter. Authorities linked her death to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare but potentially fatal disease spread by infected rodent droppings.
It is typically is reported in spring and summer, often due to exposures that occur when people are near mouse droppings in homes, sheds or poorly ventilated areas.

God help those people that had to walk in the house after two weeks of decay.
I had to do that once in Soap Lake Washington. Girlfriends dad was discovered after 2 to 3 weeks...The smell was mind numbing...you never forget it, It permeates clothing, gloves ,masks. I had to remove bodily fluids from the kitchen floor with a shovel... into a 50 gallon drum so we could finish removing whatever they wanted to take. Honest to God truth. That smell travels on anything you take, records, saddle, duck hunting decoys. Crazy

Smell might not be as bad as you think.
She was starting to mummify due to lack of moisture. The desert is not what most people think. It will literally suck the moisture out of out of anything, so what may occur in the Great North Wet is not what you may encounter in the desert.
Anyone who has lived there will tell you of similar stories about finding a pet missing after a week or a horse dead, but little to no smell.

Now how did she contract that?
From rodent droppings.
I remember several years ago entering a building on the Air Force base I work at. It had been locked, unopened for about 5 years. We had to cut a padlock to enter. When opened we discovered several classified Soviet era weapons systems and classified documents. We also noted rodent droppings all over, so got the hell out. Serious Hantavirus (https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/hantavirus-pulmonary-syndrome/symptoms-causes/syc-20351838) concern. The Air Force had to pay a special team to clean the building out before we could secure the classified. The cleaners wore special suits and full mask respirators.

it is mainly contracted by mice infected air droppings similar to TB. They hiked alot and or if there were mice in the home and she was cleaning the garage with dust.

I am clueless on Thomas or War Eagle or Porter.
I'm fairly new. New here, and on the tech sections at the other place for most of my 10 years there. Only discovered CFOT shortly before it went woke and all the cool guys got permabanned.

Mice droppings. Sounds like the house was full of vermin. This is one grizzly scene to be sure.
Didn't hear that on the news, wonder why?

Guess if you're gonna live very private lives and have a huge property combined with not having housekeeping services, things will get ratty real quick.
I probably wouldn't ever live in a place I couldn't clean and maintain by myself or at least in the family chores.

There's a lot here that doesn't make sense. Hackman must have had a large portfolio and could afford a live-in nurse. Why his wife insisted on doing it herself, especially since she herself was sick...

Was that on purpose?

My stepbrother is married to a Japanese woman and there is an extended Japanese family. Japanese culture is very strict and traditional, where the man is the king of the house and the woman's job is to support him and wait on him hand and foot. It works both ways, but the man is expected to be the breadwinner and the woman the homemaker. I'm talking about laying out socks, tie, ironed shirt and slacks every morning. With breakfast ready and on the table. Every day.
Outsourcing health care when you can still do it, even barely, would be a disgrace. Much pride and value is found in caring for loved ones personally.
I found this out in my mom's final months as the mixed step-family came into play. Very interesting stuff.

In this case his wife didn't have backup relatives, so it doesn't make sense that she wouldn't have a backup plan.

In addition to the low RH here, until the last 2 days, we have not had any rain/moisture of any value since November.
Been pretty dry all the way around.

:iagree:
People change. The woman you married is not always the woman you end up with.
And young men are inexperienced and often foolish - they don't always see the red flags, as obvious as they may seem to us.
If they knew then what they know now they wouldn't have married the Karen.

Wife died of hantavirus (how the heck?) in the house (wtf?) and Gene carried on oblivious due to his condition. Didn't feed himself for a week. Otopsy (ha) said he basically starved to death coz nothing in his stomach for a good week+.

If Gene was so far gone he couldn't feed himself, what on earth was his wife doing leaving him alone in the house and unsupervised while she ran errands all day long??
Leave a guy who is out of his tree alone, in a robe, on 12 acres on a mountain-top? Insane.

For sure.. could have been handled much better.
The way I see it, he married his caregiver. She was 30 years younger.

That's what I was thinking when I heard the Altheimer's diagnosis. She was probably doing her best for him and let her illness get the best of her. Once she died, he couldn't process it and probably just wandered around the house until he died. Very sad.
With the money they no doubt had, I am very surprised that they didn't have some help come in during the day. Cleaning, cooking, looking after Gene while she shopped. That kind of thing.

Karenism is a carrion flower that blooms in post-wall women. It is a difficult time when they no longer get the attention they've previously received just for having a pulse. Like rotten school children acting out, some of these invisible women conclude that negative attention is better than no attention.
