Mr. and Mrs. Rickles are going to take an adventure with our two dogs to visit North Carolina. I think later in April.

Any advice on what to see where to go what to do?

So I’m hearing conflicting information? Some are saying that it is a great spot for food dining nightlife. While others are saying it’s dangerous and to keep your eye open, I guess like any big city? Mrs. Rickles found it a nice B&B with a fenced in yard Just outside of the city.

Asheville, North Carolina has a high crime rate, but it's decreasing, according to the Asheville Police Department.
Recent crime statistics
In 2023, there were 596 violent crimes in Asheville, down from a record high of 727 in 2022.
In 2024, the Asheville Police Department (APD) saw more homicides than ever before, most of which were firearm-related.
Property crimes have declined every year since 2019, peaking at 5,788 that year.
Crime trends
In 2020, Asheville's crime rate was twice the national average.
In 2022, Asheville's violent crime rate was higher than the national rate.
Asheville's crime rate is higher than similarly sized metro areas.

Asheville went to shit but may be bouncing back. Of course one has to see the Biltmore mansion - its good for most of a day..and I don't know how you'll work that out with the dogs.

A real glimpse into opulence and wealth during the industrial age of the US, well before the nouveau rich tech moguls we have now....

As to dining out and after-dark activities, ask your B&B host, they invariably know the safe, decent places to go.. (Although some get kickbacks for their recommendations!)

I hear it's infested with libtards in recent decades though.

Asheville has NOT recovered from Hurricane Helene. Some roads are still missing completely. I would consider other places in the state to visit...or reconsider your trip to the Appalachian area in general. It's really not the same after the storm. It will take another 5 years or so for it to really/fully recover IMO. I almost considered buying a cabin in that area until that storm. Made me reconsider everything.

Raleigh is decent, but liberal as hell and the traffic sucks. Not to mention were going to have another winter storm tomorrow (Wed Feb 19th) which kick our nuts in for the rest of the week. Just a bad time to visit man...being honest.

Maybe consider Nashville, Gatlinburg, or Florida.

I hear you but sometimes that's the best time to visit, local businesses are grateful, you help stimulate the economy and you will sure get an appreciation of how lucky you are. All depends on what the goals are for the trip I guess...

We visited the Florida panhandle after a major storm and it was good and enjoyable...less congestion, family businesses were open and inviting, etc..

But, I also wasn't buying a waterfront cottage there - not interested in any building that has to be placed on stilts....

My experiences in Asheville have been mixed.

Greats: Biltmore, Grove Park Inn
Good: airport. Easy to fly in and out since its so small. Sucks to drive to since I26 has been under construction forever. It seems to always be backed up or delayed.
Bad. My daughter's HS team used to play them and their players and parents were some of the nastiest people.

Also, lots of devastation from Helene, so I'm told. I have not been there since.

Fair points...biggest thing is whether or not he wants a "vacation," or just some time away from the house.

No shit, our new Gubernor has already raised emergency disaster status ~36 hrs before the first snowflake. Every single road I was on so far today has been “brine’d”. One more stop for tonic water and green onions which should be a challenge as I’m sure every grocery store is in free for all mode w people panicking. Best is to come with the idiots that will be driving for no good reason. Once I get home, I. Parking the truck and not moving till Monday

I have two cousins living in the Asheville area. I haven’t asked them how things are yet but I will.

We like to walk and hike, often 8/10 miles a day when we travel to new places. Bringing the dogs does limit some things, hiking trails thru the mountains will be awesome for us all. I thought I read dogs were permitted at the Biltmore just not indoors or in the rooms?

The Biltmore House is open. Everything in the Biltmore section of town is still shit from the storm. Last time I was in downtown the pan handlers and drugies were everywhere. Local news keep saying I40 should be back open by March. With the DOT around here seeing is believing. Not herd if any of the hiking trails on or near the parkway is open or not. I26 is like Yad says. West bound from airport to I40 sucks stop and go all day long. East bound is just slow. By when you are planing they may have more of it open up. Going west of Asheville the storm didn't damage as bad.

I was an Italian who grew up in a Pittsburgh Jewish neighborhood - poor as sh!t.

We lived over the Jewish-owned grocery store, Saul (the owner) would always give me a slice of lunchmeat while making his own lunch at the counter or give me a worn out comic book to read....when I wandered in looking needy.

Remember that bit of kindness to this day...

We’re staying in Weaverville in a small B&B. I’m expecting a lot of hiking. Probably go into the city for a meal or two but that is not the main sites on our list.

I have two cousins in the area (yup crazy libs) I will visit. I’m not sure how much I’ll be able to endure if they start……

My main reason to see them is to show my disapproval of them returning to the US in retirement for our SS and Medicare…. This after spending their everything in Germany for their entire lives. They patronized and spent all their earning in a foreign country now come back….? I no like!

Even though it's only 90 minutes from me I haven't been to Asheville in at least a year, and that was to the airport. All I've seen is pictures of the flooding.

Upstream creeks here were devastated. The floods created what could be described as a moving dam of rocks and debris.
