View Full Version : Big Baller Status: Confirmed
My stove is a little long in the tooth, over a quarter century, actually, and starting to look its age, paint chipping off, etc. So on a wild hair, I perused the local want ads and found a nice two year old stove (guy had the receipt) in excellent shape for a couple hundred bucks. This one has a 5th burner "griddle" in the middle, and has an indention in the bottom of the oven to hold a cup of water so it can be "steam cleaned." Fancy stuff.
So I YOLO'd and bought it. turned out, it also cost me $ 7.50 at the hardware store for an adapter fitting for the gas line, because the new one is 5/8", but the old fitting was 1/2".
I've listed the old one free and hoping someone in need will come and get it. Oven and clock work just fine, burners need to be lit manually because the igniters got damaged when I had something boil over. Timer often times will not work. But hey, it's functional and free, in case any of you poors need something to cook on.

Maybe. The only repair I made to the old stove was replacing the oven thermocouple, and I suspect that if I cleaned the igniters, they would probably still work.

CL is pretty much dead around here. All the traffic is on Marketplace now. Good score though. I recently got a set of four beadlock wheels for my RZR for $250, then sold the tires they came with for $80.

I was excited when I bought my fridge with ice and water in the door....the pinnacle of refrigerator technology, really. I bet Sub Zero and Wolf don't have anything like that. And my microwave that also came from CL several years ago? Yeah, that bad boy has a rotating glass turntable, which the 20 year old builder microwave didn't have.

To match the “new” fridge? :D
When we left the Navy and moved back home in ‘94. We bought a house and there was a harvest gold fridge in the kitchen. We replaced it and I put it at the end of the driveway with a “free” sign on it. A lady’s son drove buy and picked it up. The lady came to our house so greatful she was crying, and brought my wife flowers. It was an old Kenmore…it’s probably still working.

When I was a kid, our house was painted green. When we moved in the late 70's Mom picked out harvest gold for EVERYTHING. Fridge, cook top, vent hood, dishwasher, counter tops, linoleum, and even the washer and dryer. I thought it was ugly even back then.

Can I ask why ? I have a portable induction cooktop that gets more use than the gas cooktop for everything.
Update:
Received multiple messages about the free stove today, starting this morning. First person I messaged back in the morning, call me and let's discuss the pickup....heard nothing back. Second person I sent the same email to about 5, so we'll see. A third inquiry was sent this afternoon, haven't responded yet.
I really don't want to give my address out to anyone until I talk to them on the phone, just to make sure they're not sketchy, or an ax murderer.

Between the high pitched buzz with my good cookware and the unstable temps, it drives me insane. But the number 1 reason - they go apeshit when the pan comes off the surface for even a moment. They will auto shut if gone too long. Flip a pancake - BEEP. Drain the spaghetti - BEEP BEEP BEEP - CLICK. ****ing hate the damn things.

Maybe you should just treat the 'burners' like land mines, and carefully slip metal on them while carefully removing the pans, so the 'burner' doesn't shut off or beep?

Not a bad guess, but I think avacado or harvest gold was the rage in '74.

Or I’ll just reinstall the old shitty Samsung gas range and make do for now.

Thanks for the reply- my portable one doesn't do that- however, I can see where that would be annoying. Very surprised about the uneven temps as I've used my IR camera to check my Induction stovetop. Hell, that's the only thing that really makes induction great.

Both my portables and stovetop make the high pitched noise. I’ve got All-Clad D3, D5 and Berndes induction pans. The Berndes are worse, so I don’t know if it has something to do with how all these pans are made. I can get the All-Clad to shut up by cooking with a paper towel between the pan and cooktop, but the Berndes scream right along.
No idea about the temp swing. I don’t start my pans empty per instructions, but they rip right past temp, then settle back down. It’ll burn anything that’s in the pan. Great for boiling water, but not much else.
The constant beeping when pan leaves the surface is an absolute deal breaker for me.

I actually have a few hundred 78’s. Most for over 50 years. I got into them at about age ten. I mainly stream the content now , but every so often I fire up the old Zenith and spin some Hoagy or Dizzy or Anita or Lionel. Does the heart good. My buddy has the Edison cylinder set up. The cylinders don’t wear out like the disc’s do.

I have over a foot of 78s dating back to the 1920s. I play them on my 1915 Victrola that was abandoned in a house that my grandfather bought in the mid 60's. I pulled the mechanism apart, cleaned and greased it, and it works like it is new. I refinished the exterior with Formby's, and it matches the original finish in the interior perfectly.
The wind-up handle is rusted on the outside. I may take the initiative and restore that, dip it in muriatic then re-plate with nickel.
‘Replaying with nickel’= Yadkin gets it. My hat is off to you , Sir! When I had a wind-up portable Victrola as a kid , I would use cactus needles instead of the steel ones for a quiet and soft tone. Also less wear on the records. The value of this old equipment is stale these days like many things from the pre- war era. You and I GAF, but most don’t.

*Re-plating, as in electroplating.
I have three types of needles, steel, bamboo and brass with jeweled ends. The brass needles are necked down near the middle; various diameters correspond to volume.
The megaphone is built into the wood cabinet and you open or closed the doors to further control volume.

Back in the 70's the best turntable that I could afford was a belt drive Marantz. Back then replacement belts, they had about a five year life, cost a couple bucks. Last time I bought one, in the 90s, it was about $25.
In the early 2000s a neighbor had a yard sale and his Sanyo two motor Quartz PLL Direct Drive Plus Q50 had a tag on it for $5. Strobe on it verifies the correct platter speed. The cover was broken. I gave him the $5, cleaned up the turntable, and swapped the cover from my Marantz.
A few months later my neighbor came over and I showed him his old turntable. He was pissed.
Still works great. I may have to clean up some switches.
MASSIVE UPDATE:
An older lady and her husband picked up the stove, she says her oven would come on at random, which seems dangerous to me.
