View Full Version : Self insure?
Since RA#4 I'm seriously considering self-insuring for comprehensive and collision on my daily drivers. The Porch was paid off 5 months after I bought it and the Ranger I just wrote a check, so no bank can force me to insure.
Just make sure you have coverage for liability. I have regular insurance on the Tundra but collectible insurance on the rest of my vehicles.

Liability is the big expense in car insurance, at least here in FL. I tried to drop collision and fire/theft and it was like $90/6 months savings.
Just make sure you have coverage for liability. I have regular insurance on the Tundra but collectible insurance on the rest of my vehicles.
"Compulsory" insurance includes liability. Plus I have a rider on my homeowners.
The classics will continue to be insured for comp and collision regardless, since that is so cheap.

Gov says;
From the google:
Yes, you can self-insure your car in North Carolina if you meet certain requirements:
You must be the registered owner of more than 25 vehicles
You must obtain a certificate of self-insurance from the Commissioner
You must provide proof of at least $205,000 in collateral

I'm talking about informally; only paying for compulsory, and accepting the risk for comprehensive and collision, on the vehicles that I own outright.

I guess you can do whatever you want as long as you meet state requirements.

You actually stumbled on a great point. My recent history, in the last two years, events involving, or could have involved, insurance claims.
1. Ranger, hit on the rear bumper by "an old woman", who drove off: hit and run. Did not make a claim.
2. Ranger, rear-ended by an 93 year old man. He man'd up and his insurer paid for everything, including a loaner.
3. Ranger, shipping cart at Home Depot. Hit and run. I forked over $1400 to get it fixed, and avoided a potential "ding" on my insurance.
4. Porsche, windshield cracked. $1600 bill and my deducible is $1000.
5. Ranger, shopping cart, Floridiot, tourist, who refuses to man up. Cost TBD. For the sake of argument let's call it $2000. My deductible is, again, $1000.
My cost with insurance $3400. My cost if I didn't have comprehensive and collision, $5000. Difference is $1600, or $400 per car per year.

Surely you meant $500.
He called the Police, the day after, attempting to cover himself, then gave them false information. $1000 collision, $500 comprehensive.
Surely you meant $500.
No, I was wrong about the comprehensive deductible on the Ranger before. It's $1000.

So you are not really going to 'self insure' you are just considering carrying only liability?
These types of tough choices are usually best left to adults who understand the proper terminology.

It USED to be that a rule of thumb was to drop collision/comp after your car was a certain number of years old (5 years back in the 60s) as the premiums were more than it was worth to repair most damage - not the case anymore. Parents back then used to get their new drivers just liability on a used 'beater' for their kids....

Take the collision/comp premium cost for the first 12-18 months and set aside as a separate slush fund if the worst should happen. That'll eliminate somewhat, any surprise expenses and after that you can bank the savings.

I can read the writing on the wall fine myself. Although I need cheaters for the fine print.
I owe not one penny on any of my 7 registered and insured vehicles.
I carry liability only on all.
NY mandates uninsured motorist [50K] so unless I drive like the ass Yaddy used to do videos of I think I will be fine.
I haven't had an accident or whatever he calls them in over 30 years.
Sometimes it is just how and where you live and drive I guess.

So by that token one can also smoke pot in reasonable quantities and still have good judgement.

Well, he mis-interpreted what I had to say about Jeff Bridges. I am judging the actor, not a character he played. The actor, although highly skilled, is delusional and insulated from the real world.

A lot depends on when you smoke. Science tells us that the human brain is not fully "wired" until age 25 or so; if a kid smokes pot before then, they can cause some serious damage. OTOH if a full adult starts smoking pot the impact to their cognitive processes is a lot lower, generally speaking.

It's been my experience, in my misspent youth, that no amount of pot is a "reasonable quantity". Whereas a couple of beers will relax you after a long day, a couple of tokes will just make you stupid.
Politically, of course, as a life-long small L libertarian, I don't care what drugs you take, or how much or how often, as long as it has no negative impact on me.

My experience as well. And after I retired 3 years ago and tried it again, for the first time in decades, 6 tokes made me a dull moron for the rest of the evening.
I wish it affected me like booze, but it doesn't.

Last time I did it was when I was 35. We were in Jamaica and I got some weed off a guy that I met in a local market. I bought an ironwood carving that he made (that I still have) and we talked politics for a good half-hour. Solid dude. The weed was good but after a few tokes I put it away, gave it to our pool guy.
We had some very strong weed back in high school. Our involuntary supplier was a local professional that one of our gal friends would occasionally babysit for. She discovered his stash and judiciously helped herself of small enough amounts that the guy had no clue. (He had several bricks.) We used to go camping at a nearby state forest, roam the grounds at night and get everyone we met stoned like it was their first time. The Jamaican weed wasn't as strong as that stuff.
Went to Jamaica in 1984 and will never go back. What a shithole. The natives were so aggressive they made Mexican hustlers look lazy. Grand Cayman, FTW.

They were aggressive but friendly and respectful.
Last time we went our son was an infant. We were in Ocho Rios, I was waiting in our rented car while my wife went into a bank to get more cash, our son asleep in the rear seat. During that 15 minutes there was a small parade of locals trying to sell me all sorts of things. A ten-second pitch, followed by my thoughtful decline.
The funniest was a very attractive, tall, female prostitute. I was admiring her smiling eyes during her pitch, then she looked right and noticed my son and said "oh!", winked at me and left.
