I am a huge 4Runner fan. The new generation coming out looks awesome. Not sure Im digging the turbo 4 cylinder engine choice but Toyotas have always had notoriously bad gas mileage so it may work.

I think these look awesome. I think there are something like 6 trim levels.

I had an 02 and loved it. These are the next 3rd gen from a capability standpoint. They are building these for real off road/overland work.

Tons of factory auxiliary switches built in to the factory wiring harness(no splicing which is huge to me), rear lockers, sway bar disconnect, full time 4wd.

They are way more than a standard street SUV IMO.

Unless they have changed, they are body on frame built. Very nice vehicles. Toyota is proud of them $$.

They are overly pricey. The new ones look great. I will wait a few years and buy a nice used one. :seasix:

Now you're talking brother! That's the way to do it! I bought my Chevy 1500 Silverado brand new, but only because a guy backed out of his deal on the truck......which he ordered before Covid struck......for a screaming deal. I got it $15K under what was the going MSRP for a Silverado in 2022 - couldn't pass up the bargain. Plus - cloth seats, no sunroof, Z71 package, spray in bedliner, hard cover tonneau. She's a beaut!

I have this 5th Gen Lunar Rock TRD Pro… Really wasn’t looking for one, but it fell into my lap at a price I couldn’t pass up… Been offered more than I paid for it several times.

Dad had an '89 he bought new and it was great. I had a '94 I bought lightly used and ran it for 16 years on a ton of off road trips and was never let down. Great vehicle. Underpowered, crappy seat, but super reliable, super capable, and the best brakes and sound system I've ever had.

They got big and bloated in the 2010's.....with seating that is still too low to the floor and crappy. I would have zero interest in a 4 or 6 cylinder turbo, as I worked on and drove the 4 cylinder turbo Toyota 4x4's in the 1980's and they sucked. The last thing you need on the trail is a high-winding, low torque powerband. You want low rpm grunt, just the opposite.
Plus, the whole 'small engine with turbo' thing is a bad plan if you plan on keeping your vehicle for any length of time, as small, highly stressed, performance-tuned engines are not long lasting or trouble free, ever.
In 2016 when mine was getting long in tooth I settled on a low mileage first gen Tundra. Silky V8 power, comfortable seating, great off-road and payload ability, and the same physical size as the new Tacoma, just a hair wider. And the Tacoma has the shitty seats and no V8.

Funny, the 285 HP V8 in my Tundra gets the same or better MPG than the 150 HP V6 in my old 4Runner at the same road speeds. Mainly because it's not working so hard. I would not be a player for ANY turbo off road rig.

I didn't think so either, but my wife saw one on BringATrailer. I thought it was a conversion, but it was a factory option.

4Runner offered a 4.7L i-Force V8 engine for all models with an output of 235 horsepower at 4,800 rpm and 320 lb-ft of torque at 3,400 rpm.

I just found this out about a month ago.

well son of a bitch, 235hp for a V8 is 1994 level V8:rofl: though I can't bitch, my '73 has a blistering 195 hp (350 out of a 89 blazer), but it sounded good when it ran

None of the Japanese truck/SUV offerings do much for me. I don’t know what the sales figures are for MN but it sure seems like there’s significantly more Chevy trucks around here than Ford.

:iagree:
The old ones were bullitproof and reasonably priced and held their value. The only thing bad I have to say about them is the shitty gas mileage for a small vehicle.
As to the new ones they are so ridiculously priced it is absurd.

I have a 2019 Limited Nightshade.. I really like it. Very rugged. Quiet, solid, and great on and off road. Only got buried once it, till I hit the magic button, and got out of the slimy mud hole.
There are some silly things that can be addressed, but Toyotas 5th gen is pretty darn nice. Little Pricey, but nice.
New ones I like, but I will wait a couple years to see how this new engine works out..

Wrong...while both are body on frame the chassis of the FJ was designed after the Land Cruiser Prado and the 4 Runner was built on the pickup platform.

I’ve owned a 2002, 2008, and currently a 2018. I don’t take it off-road but I do pull a utility trailer, haul two medium sized dogs, and drive on snowy/icy roads. They don’t have a lot of power but they start when I turn the key and they have great re-sale value even after 10 years and 120k miles. I’ll have to see how the 6th gen models work out when it comes time to get something new.

This last summer, my truck battery died on a day it was 110 degrees… I went to Autozone to buy a new battery, bringing my core with me. Imagine my surprise when the clerk said, “Sir, you bought this battery at Autozone and it’s covered by warranty. Let me grab you another, no charge.” Wow.. forgot where I bought it because it was 5 years old.

Wrong...while both are body on frame the chassis of the FJ was designed after the Land Cruiser Prado and the 4 Runner was built on the pickup platform.

This is correct. Both vehicles are robust and remain rattle free after years of banging around in the dirt and rocks. I looked into an FJ back in 2007 and it wasn't for me. Getting into the back and using the space felt like I was in an MRI tube. That, and terrible on-road fuel mileage. Several guys in my group run used Lexus 470's that are about 20 years old. They do everything in comfort, are less beat on than the landcruisers, and are cheap as used vehicles. Only drawback is fuel mileage. But you can buy a lot of fuel when you pay 6-8k for a vehicle that still has another 200,000 miles in it. Without transmission problems, check engine lights, head gaskets, timing chains, etc.
Stone stock, Toyotas have been head and shoulders above the other brands in off-road durability. The absolute worst? Land Rover or Range Rover. Followed by Subaru and then anything GM and then Jeep.

I agree. It took me 9 months to find a first gen Tundra 4x4 with the 4.7 that wasn't beat to death or had a zillion miles on it. This was 2016, so I was looking for 10-16 year old rigs. I finally found one that had 61k on the clock with all the HD running gear stuff (towing/cooling/charging/suspension/posi) and none of the fu- fu stuff. I snapped it up and it now is closing on 90,000 miles. It should outlast me. I like everything about the truck except it's stupid suicide rear doors. And the build quality of the cab is not equal to my Japan built '94 4Runner. But that V8 is silky smooth and has gobs of power, and it's excellent off-road, and about the size of a '67-'72 C-10. Not some gargoyle-faced monstrosity like the new stuff that's too big to fit on a trail.

It’s crazy how smooth and balanced the Lexus/Toyota 4.7 is. Makes most other engines feel like soviet contraptions. There’s always a catch. In their case the power is meh, the mpg is meh,, the exhaust manifold leaks are a pain and at least the GX is annoying tl remove the steering rack and do a timing belt swap.

I was at Toyota factory training in Ontario CA in 2001 taking a body class, and it was an eye opener. Breakfast on linen tablecloths in the class. Fresh cut orchids in the dining room on the tables at lunch, with fresh sushi, etc.

Over in the Lexus dept, we learned that both Toyota AND Lexus used plain paper for the final polish on their crank journals. Paper. They had samples with 300,000 miles torn down with virtually zero wear. Looked like new. Just super high quality control and tight tolerances. Then I get back to the shop and I'm working on a Jeep that has different size bearings and cylinders in the same engine. I mean, why discard a crappy crank when you can run an oversize bearing on a single journal? Or scrap a block when you can go .002" oversize on a piston?
Keep a Toyota or Lexus engine clean inside and keep up the cooling system and it will run forever.

When I got it I was going to steam off the murals and change out the wheels. Never got around to it, and now it looks straight out of a CHiPs episode.

It did have 31x 11:50's on it at one time and looked a bit more rugged. I don't wheel it much these days. 115878
