Pot smoking Bob Marley tee shirt and wearer removed from Rowan courtroom
Thursday, May 12th, 9:00 am
SALISBURY, N.C. - A woman who came to court to face an 18 year old public consumption of alcohol charge wound up in jail after a dispute with the judge about her Bob Marley tee shirt.
Tonya Evette Bronson, 45, was charged with public consumption of alcohol by Salisbury Police in 1993 and came to court on Wednesday, according to a court official.
District Court Judge Charlie Brown took offense to Bronson's tee shirt. It showed an image of reggae singer Bob Marley smoking pot.
The judge made Bronson leave the courtroom in order to go out and turn the tee shirt inside out, hiding the image of the singer and his marijuana.
Bronson was placed in jail for contempt of court and told to pay $60. Bronson didn't have the money and was placed in the detention center. As of late Thursday morning, she was still there, unable to come up with $60 to get out.

Dumb as it is, it appears a woman is sitting in jail for exercising her rights under the first amendment.

I completely agree. Was she pretty stupid for wearing it?? Well, c'mon, it's court so wake the f*ck up. I guess everyone in America needs something to be offended by though.:leaving:
Does the judge have some great insider knowledge that Bob was actually smoking pot in the picture emblazoned on the t-shirt, rather than tobacco, clover, or even oregano?
Is the judge some kind of psychic? Perhaps the judge just hates black people.
Is there some sort of dress code that prohibits the wearing of t-shirts in court? If not, then the judge was out of line and a prick.
The woman violated the social more of good taste in the courtroom. Are we going to jail people for breaking other social mores, too? Perhaps we should start jailing people who wear too much perfume, for example. Maybe we should start jailing people for wearing jorts. Where will it all end?
Free Evette Bronson!
Have some respect for the courtroom.
She was in court to face a charge of drinking alcohol in public. Ooooh, scary. That crime must be right up there with serial murder.
She is in court fighting a puritanical charge that should have never been a law in the first place. Ever had a beer at a block party on a public street? I have. That makes me a criminal, same as Evette, and if you had done the same, then you too would then face the same charge this woman was in court for.
How much respect would you have for being dragged into court for such foolishness?
In fairness, though, I get what you are saying. Common sense should have told the woman to dress better and not piss off a judge who has power over her at the time. She fails the common sense test, even though I feel she had every right to wear that shirt.

Yea because we all know Judges just like LEO's are on power trips most of the time. My court My rules and you will do as I say. I'll agree it wasn't very intelligent of her to wear it in my opinion but she probably did it to make a statement and actually she made her point. If she would have worn a tie-dye shirt with a peace sign on it would he have made her do the same thing? If it would have been a shirt with say MLK on it talking about the oppression of the white man would he have done the same thing? If there is no sign outside the court room saying that no shirts with slogans for alcohol or other things are allowed then it was an abuse of power on his part. Now I Bet that she wasn’t in shorts as most court rooms don’t allow them.

Even when I have taken days off to go to court I still wear at the least a polo and dress pants.
another example of lack of decency...discipline & respect.
and, of course the liberals are gonna hang their opinion on the 1st amendment.
having the constitutional right to free speech, doesn't mean one should always exercise that right.
would you wear that shirt to a job interview? would you tell the possible future employer that you didn't like his tie?
would you tell a judge you didn't like his haircut? or his attitude?
it's no wonder the woman doesn't have the 60 bucks. some just don't figure out how the game is played...until it becomes time to play the victim.
