View Full Version : The local ying-yang and $100 bills . . .

So I drive out of the hills, more into the farmland, to the local guy who does NYS car inspections, to get a sticker for my '23 Mazda. He is a self-employed excavator and the guy who dozed my creek bank back in 2021. Those pix were posted at "that other Corvette forum."

This guy is a freaking prize. He's 71, hates the government, taxes, regulations, and basically everybody on the planet unless he knows you. We have a long history, some involving guns in a not good way, but I'll leave that for another day.

His typical sentence: "Those cocksuckers in Albany are a bunch of mother****ing douchebags. Those pricks want every mother****ing extra penny I have so they can live high on the cocksucking hog. The dirty mother****ers." And I'm not exaggerating, that's how he talks. He's actually a nice guy, generous and accommodating, if you know him and you're not a government employee.

This was on the way to his place -- a nice open valley, good farmland, although the pix don't really do the view justice:

Upstate is awesome; lived there for 11 years. Was an elected in official in the NYS Conservative Party.

I looked around me, saw a lot of like minded, but frustrated individuals, fighting an uphill battle that could never be won. I took the advice of older gentlemen, one in my Party and another a Republican in the State Senate, and escaped to North Carolina.

Meh, I've been a registered NYS Conservative for 30-some years. It's all just symbolic, but at least I can trash the feckless GOP for being sell-out wimps without being a hypocrite.

My mother's ancestors came here to Cattaraugus County in 1802 from New England, my GG-grandfather fought in the Civil War and told my mom first-hand stories about it, so I'm not going anywhere.

My 3rd g-grandfather, Benjamin Chamberlin, fought in the Revolutionary War.

Great, but it's still a losing battle. The decision to move to NC was the second best move in my life.

Eh, if I was younger I would probably move. Kind of impossible now. Only got 8-10 years left.

All the state inspection does is cause poor people to have to pay off crooked inspectors to pass their raggly-ass shit cars. Because if they had the money, they'd either actually FIX the cars, or buy ones that aren't clapped out death traps.

It's crap. If I was a lawmaker, I'd put up a bill to eliminate state inspections, and also to make Texas a one license plate state.

He's a bit shady, and helps the locals out whenever possible. If a vehicle requires a plug-in to pass inspection then he had to do it. Otherwise he lets a lot of things slide, like checking the suspension, brakes, or tires.

I took my '07 Vette to him last month and he just plugged it in as required, didn't check anything else (although it's all good). My '23 Mazda doesn't require a plug-in til next year so he didn't even look at anything, he just put a sticker on it.

I always give him an extra five bucks. :yesnod:

I've had my Vette for over 10 years in a state that requires a front plate, but I've never put it on (no bracket for it anyway, the plate remains in the cubby).

I've passed zillions of sheriffs and troopers, nobody has ever pulled me over. A couple of summers ago I went past a hidden trooper with radar doing 65 in a 55, no front plate, and nothing happened. It helps to have a white beard and stock exhaust. :hurray:

Lots of people in Texas don't run front plates, mostly higher end cars and SUV's, sports cars, and of course, Teslas. The state troopers seem to be the only ones interested in screwing with people, but that, plus a thousand other BS laws are all the pretext an officer would need if he decides you are the person he will be ****ing with today. It's also illegal to have a license plate frame that covers "The Lone Star State" emblazoned on the bottom of most Texas plates. EVERYONE has those, either from the dealer they bought it from, university or frat/sorority affiliation, sports team, etc.

I don't have license plate frames, and have my Vette plates on the dashboard, which.....yup. STILL illegal. I recall at the bad place Vette owners remarking that they'd been stopped and harassed for that.

Even my rear plate is illegal because of my homemade frame that covers part of it, but no cop has ever even looked at it.

Depends on the cop, some can be azzhats and if they pull you over for something else just pile on ancillary charges for anything else they find.

Plates, I had over 30 years of Vette driving and no plate tickets. I have had much more of my fair share of roadside chats with LEOs!:D Still am a leadfoot. Was asked a couple times and told them plate is in the trunk/back. One actually said to me a few years ago your old enough to know better. We both laughed and he let me go, no speeding ticket either. Most of my Vettes did not have stock exhaust!

A good fried that used to be a traffic safety officer in a PD next to Albany told me that some times the missing plate is being used on another car so that is mainly what their looking for. ( This was pre license plate reader era, much could have changed now)

As far as traffic cops, in general let me state in most cases the closer you get to NY City the more Mickey Mouse the cops are. This is coming from a lifetime state resident with 62 years of driving experience both pleasure and CDL driving!

I don't doubt that any. I'm glad I'm 350 miles away from that shithole.

You get any snow? I heard there was a foot the other day in the higher elevations. Nothing here but flakes in the air on the hilltops.

None by my place yet. In a way that is good My house is +- 900' in elevation!. I like many other people up here have a long hilly gravel driveway! If it snows enough to be plow able and the ground is not frozen you have problems.

The last couple years that has been the case and gives a lot of tractor work in the spring. Most years about the earliest I get a plowable snow is mid November. Course the way the weather is acting anything is possible.

Texas did away with vehicle inspections starting in 2025, except in some liberal shithole counties, like Harris (go figure) county. I have 2 cars that I have only one license plate on and I've never had a problem with the police. I live in Comal County which went 97% for Trump in 2020. Come on over!
