This is my 2012 4Runner. You can see where I removed the paint protection film (that shit really works!) and what the rest of the hood looks like (and the roof).

Toyota has shit paint quality apparently. This all popped up over this summer - it wasn't there in May.

I think I'm going to just cover it with satin black vinyl.

This is what it would sort of look like...

It will look like it has black primer on the hood. Totally ghetto. Apparently, you never took care of the paint.

So basically either wax his vehicle or wax his body :island14: :funnier:

That's why clearcoat sucks.

My 39 year old Toyota has its original paint and has always been parked outside. Still shiny. But factory toxic non-water-based single stage enamel. Not bullshit water based clear-coat. The paint on my '94 4Runner failed in about 12 years. Always garaged. Hood and roof. 111662

I’ve only had it for two years.

Cannot speak for all but Toyotas, but the SUVs and Trucks have soft paint and any minor rub and paint is marred. This is 180 from my European cars....maddening.

Matte/satin vinyl is gross. If you don't want it to look like paint, might as well go full retard and buy carbon fiber vinyl. Otherwise a glossy metallic that actually looks like paint is a better look than obvious vinyl pretending to be primer.

There is a wrap that people say matches the color pretty well. The good news is that the wrap is only $50. So if I don’t like one, I can tear it off and put something else on. I think you are right. I will go for the wrap that is close to the paint color.

I really don’t need to do anything to it. I just want to protect it from rust. I don’t plan on selling it (I’ll run it into the ground). It runs great, no other issues.

It’s also a Limited so it has all the bells and whistles as of 2012.

Take the hood off, sand it yourself, then take it to an independant auto paint shop with the factory paint code to be sprayed. I did this with my Crystal Black Grand Cherokee hood. They charged me $100. It came out great.

Ya I'd say the EPA is ultimate culprit here. Or is it OSHA?

Sounds like a good plan to me. Earl Scheib it.

I’ll call around and see if anyone does it. What year did you do that? The paint and clear are more than $100 these days. I’m guessing it would be at least $300 around here.

Hell, if I want to do that much work, I could paint it myself. I’ve painted several cars, have the equipment, etc. I just don’t have the time to do the prep, wet sand, buff, etc.

Truth be known I’m really fighting fatigue and don’t want to get in too far and then not be able to finish it.

I’ll probably wrap it for now, then paint it eventually when I can handle it.

My hand is so ****ed up, that’s a whole other problem. I’ve lost use of it almost completely just because any use of it causes immense pain. I have to patiently wait to heal. I’m not a patient man.

I have a 2019 4Runner. I expect the paint to be bad over time. Its parked most of its time in the garage.. Toyota is known for reliability, but known for its rather crappy pain too.
Sux, but, its not worth painting the whole car, or is it.

Toyota's invented a new painting process with electrostatically charged paint so it wastes 30% less paint so maybe they'll use better paint as a result of having less waste

As stated above take the hood off and prep it yourself and then you just need a "trigger man" and the cost of the paint. This is no big deal for those of us that have dealt with classic cars...

You can ask to have it done in single-stage paint. PPG Concept is what I used to use, which is now being sold by TCP Global as their house brand AU (acrylic urethane).

https://tcpglobal.com/pages/acrylic-urethane-paint

You may want to try to find an independent painter. Most body shops are about insurance claims and won’t do custom work or they’ll price it so high you won’t want to have it done. Since this is sand and spray, it shouldn’t cost much. I’d do the hood, top of fenders and roof if the rest of the paint looks good.

I remember back in the 90's when Ford was having issues with paint fading on the top surfaces like that. I think they blamed it on the primer or something. A friend of mine got his Mustang repainted under warrantee.

Not even close to worth the money.

That's one way of looking at it. A better way is, what would it cost per month to own a vehicle like that that looks good, then divide the improvement cost by that figure.

For example, say $400/ month "car payment", and a $2000 repair.

$2000/$400 per month = 5 months.

Will the vehicle last more than five months?

That's why clearcoat sucks.

My friend Mike, who owns a professional restoration and paint shop, explained it to me like this. You can buy $100/ gallon clear and it will last one year. Leave the car outside or garaged; doesn't matter. One year.

You can also buy $200 or $300 per gallon clear and those will last a little longer. But if you want a paint job to last "forever", then you'll need to pay $400/ gallon.

Those are pre-Biden costs so now they are probably a lot higher.

It will last probably about eight more years. I don't drive much post COVID

No point trying to get amazing clearcoat when you can just slap on xpel or some such protective film if you want to preserve the paint as is.
