View Full Version : Love my neighbors but....

Why can't some just leave wildlife alone and enjoy it without interference ?

My damned neighbors started feeding the local Sandhill Cranes with their grandkids in the afternoons. These are 5 foot birds with raucous, prehistoric calls. Now at dusk and twilight these f*ckers show up and call incessantly to be fed for hours, you can hear this one's mate in the background. They are protected species so I can't follow my more base instincts....a conundrum for sure.

I've been feeding the block chicken and her chick. So far no one has complained. They're not noisy, but the chicken has figured out she can clank her food bowl on my porch in the morning so I can hear it, then come out and bring breakfast.

I hear you! Lucky I didn’t hear them.

First thing I learned from Rangers when I started hiking and visiting national parks was the harm in feeding wildlife. As obviously as it may be, many don’t understand that feeding wildlife may cause starvation once the human intervention stops.

Kind of like giving feral humans free food, housing, and drugs.

Damn, Frank....that crane is louder and more irritating than a garbage truck backup alarm.

Maybe the Red Ryder BB gun you grew up with will not kill a crane.

Nowadays there are a bazillion 177 and 22 air rifles that will absolutely kill small game and even big caliber air rifles with 400 ft lbs muzzle energy that will kill a deer.

Back on point, they are protected in FL under federal migratory bird law and I would think the fine for plinking at them even with a Red Ryder would be plenty prohibitive.

Penalty:

Misdemeanor offenses shall be fines a maximum of $5000 and or imprisoned for not more than six months for individuals, or $10,000 fine for an organization.

Felony offenses shall be fined maximum of $250,000 and/or imprisoned for not more than two years for an individual or $100,000 for an organization.

I have a wealthy redneck neighbor who was shooting egrets and herons on a dock for a while. I think he eventually found out about the penalties.

:iagree:

Especially people who feed seagulls or squirrels, both of which are a PITA. Last place I lived seagulls were a noisy dirty quiet suburb spoiler. When you saw them circling the house 2 doors down you knew the lil old cat lady was feeding them again.

Mercifully I'm well away from seagull feeders, BUT there's an old **** (male) two doors away who feeds squirrels. I find their peanut shells around my property, and holes in the lawn. He's a sad kinda fellow with an old dementia wife, has a lot of trouble, so nobody pressures him.

Last autumn I trapped and released 14 of the lil fkrs (you're supposed to kill them, but without a gun licence I'm not about to drown them - the only other option.)*

I saw a 15th last november but as he never showed up on the lawn I thought I'd won the war. Until today. New sighting ON THE LAWN this morning, so it's peanut butter and the cage trap again.

* Gun licence is possible if you're in a (target) shooting club or a country dweller like farmers, most of whom have shotguns. Loosing off rounds in suburbia is a big no-no of course.

"Never feed cranes! It is illegal to feed sandhill cranes and is harmful to both the birds and people (Florida Administrative Code 68A-4.001(6)). Feeding sandhill cranes – intentionally or unintentionally – may cause them to linger in undesirable areas, lose their natural fear of people, and increase the risk of aggressive behaviors. If you observe illegal feeding of sandhill cranes, please report the violation to the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline: 1-888-404-3922."

I had to argue with one neighbor's @hole uncle, visiting from NJ to NOT feed the alligators. He was actually out on their pier with a "chicken neck" trying to attract one. Got heated and I told him I'd report his ass.

Jerk will go back to NJ and I'll have a dangerous, dinosaur coming up to my shore for food.

Who said anything about shooting cranes? He needs to shoot the neighbors with something non lethal. A low powered BB gun might be the ticket, or a paint ball gun shooting frozen paint balls. Hell, maybe a beanbag shotgun even. All three sound reasonable.

Next time, tell him if he does it again, you'll post his address online and let the thugs in NJ know that his home is vacant and all the stuff in it is free.

Its against the law in Florida

Feeding wildlife is generally discouraged and, in some cases, illegal. In Florida, it is illegal to feed manatees, Sand Hill Cranes, bears, raccoons, foxes, and alligators. Intentionally placing food or garbage, allowing the placement of food or garbage, or offering food or garbage in such a manner that it attracts black bears, foxes, raccoons, or sandhill cranes and thereby creates a public nuisance is prohibited.

Because they invite me over to their annual "Start of Summer" cook out (usually 150 people), I can count on them when I need somebody to watch the house for a week or bring deliveries inside when I'm gone and a dozen other neighborly things. That's what being neighborly is..

Most of the time my dogs took care of it but occasionally blue herons were hitting my ponds pretty hard in the hotter part of the day. I got one of these but mine is just a floating head, no remote. Seemed to work here … a few hundred miles from any wild gators.

I really like Sandhill's but they can be noisy and feeding them is just dumb. As stated its also illegal. They will stick around regardless. We had a family outside of our house that stayed in the neighborhood for two years. Here is one getting very upset with a baby gator.
