Does that make you old or wealthy/well off? :funny: I don’t cut my grass anymore bc of time. I enjoy the work but not the hours it takes on my weekends.
"What age is old?"
I think it was George Burns who said it best: When you start going to your friends' kids' funerals. :(

I'm doing something similar for my 14 year old grandson. I bought a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 297k miles on it for him. I'm now in the process of totally rebuilding it for him. New engine and transmission, entire suspension replaced, fully gutted and redone interior, and new paint. It will be a brand new vehicle when I'm done with it. Every time I go to the shop to work on it, I think to myself, What the **** have you done? You should have bought him a new car!" I'm too old for this shit!

I turn 70 in October. I don't feel old and do all but the heaviest of things. For example, this afternoon I'll be running up to a local mountain and installing an antenna as part of our radio network.
(all things being equal, you only get old when you let age make you old)
I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now.

What makes me feel old is when you have six grandchildren and you only think of them as kids who's lives revolve around grandpa when he's around. The the two oldest graduate high school and one heads off to college this month and the other prepares to leave for a church mission while the two youngest are now in high school.
Where did the time go? :island14:

I’m not sure, but I do not feel my age most of the time. Girls in my yoga class ask me how I look much younger than my age, and I’ll take that as evidence that I'm doing something right.
I turn 70 in October. I don't feel old and do all but the heaviest of things. For example, this afternoon I'll be running up to a local mountain and installing an antenna as part of our radio network.
(all things being equal, you only get old when you let age make you old)
Here's how I see it:
As we age our parts start wearing out, or don't function as well as they did when young -- and I'm not talking necessarily about dicks, I mean every organ and system in our bods.
Many things can be "fixed" or replaced but not everything. And the fix is never as good as when we were young. Drugs, for the most part, just cover up symptoms of an underlying problem. Despite the advances in medicine, doctors cannot make us young again.
I kinda learned this lesson as my dad went through his last years of life (1913-2000).
And again when an 89 year-old buddy fell last fall (no bones broken) but never recovered. Up until about 85 he was the picture of health, wasn't on any maintenance drugs, mind was sharp, felt good and was very active.
But after he fell he was in and out of the hospital, they did this and that but could not make him young again. His years dragged him down and he drew his last breath in June.
And such is the life cycle.

I actually felt awkward/guilty hiring people to do things I did all my life. This started when I retired at age 60. Then I started to realize that I could spend all day pulling a toilet and doing a reseal or instead pay a 30 year old guy $125 to do it in an hour, I started to understand. I don't dig irrigation ditches anymore, either. Still do my car stuff, but the other mundane stuff? Why? My time is too important for that stuff, even if it's spent here, desperately looking for ONE interesting thread. :)

I’m going to stop trying to define it. When I was a kid, thirty was old. When I was twenty…it was forty. Now that I’m 60, it’s no longer a number. It’s a look and how someone gets around.

Since the question specified an age, I will say 60 just to answer the question with a number. Before 60, I was dating younger women who thought I was around their age.
To answer the question metaphysically, old age is the time you can no longer perform most tasks as before. At 68, there are few things I cannot do myself so I don’t consider myself old. I would say old age is a state of mind.
When I tell my grandkids I’m old, they say: “no you aren’t!” Then I take them out for an ice cream.

Like I said, I turn 70 in October, spent 4 hours on the mountain today (Parrett Mountain for those in Orygun) installing a sector antenna (5.8 gHz for that matter), probably walked a mile or 2, sweated my balls off, climbed a ladder repeatedly and I feel great!
Not bad for a man missing a prostate and part of a lung, huh?
What's old? My buddy's 1936 Dodge, rode in it tonight for the first time. Original, unrestored, in great shape, never in salt.

Looky here Adog, it's not a "frame of mind." https://i.imgur.com/jkx6Zdo.gif
Some people remain healthy well into their 80s, some people are shot in their 60s. It's the luck of the draw, genetics, lifestyle, diet, etc.
Years ago a young guy I know complained to me about his late Grandpa (who I knew very well) "He just sat around more and more got really bad and then died." He thought his Grandpa died because he just sat around and didn't do anything.
The real reason he "just sat around" was because he was a diabetic, had two open-heart surgeries, had foot problems, and probably felt like shit.
When I feel like shit I just sit around too. But I get better (so far) he did not. He was only 72-73.

Are you guys spending more or less in retirement than during your peak earning years?
Some people say you spend less because you have fewer responsibilities like kids out of the house, house paid off, etc. Others say you spend more because you have time to take trips or spend on hobbies, increased health care costs may be a thing too.
I've been spending a lot of time trying to plan out my retirement savings and figure I'm fine with my current standard of living but unfortunately can't see what the future holds for old age.

I'll be 72 in October. Still try to do everything myself. Only limitation is my knee. Had 1 knee replaced in 2021 and a knee replacement is not the same as the one you're born with. There are some limitations. I still can't crouch down and there's positional periodic stiffness. My other knee has a torn meniscus on the mend. I also have arthritis in both shoulders, wrists and elbows. I still lift light weights to maintain upper body strength. I still cut trees, haul logs and split them.
I no longer have the flexibility to crawl around the attic though.
I did recently start paying for a lawn fertilizer service only due to the high cost of weed n feed.

Yup, I just lost a friend and neighbor at age 92, he got frail and forgetful and fell down, broke a hip, went into a facility and never came out; his two year younger wife is now on a walker and has had to put their immaculate house up for sale. So sad, but hey, tis a 'circle of life' thing.
My uncle (lives in Pittsburgh) is 90 now and alone but just took a self-guided walking tour of all the Washington DC tourist attractions and monuments.
If you want a long, vibrant life then pick you parents and grandparents carefully!

My ancestors have a mixed record of longevity. Some well into their 90s, some much younger. I never had a chance to vote on any of this.
However, one point that has become food for thought as I've gotten older:
Would you rather live to be 90, but spend your last 5 years in a nursing home unable to do anything for yourself . . . ?
or . . .
Die at 85, but be reasonably healthy and just go to bed one night at home and never wake up?
I'd take the second choice, no contest. :yesnod:

My Aunt died in June, she was 96. I was still taking her out to restaurants when she was 94, but took a bad fall and ended up in a rehab facility. Got out, fell again, and into a skilled nursing facility, she never left.

I thought that when I was 12. Now I know better. As long as you're active and can play sports and have fun, you're not old. Injury can make you old. Don't get injured. I have young kids and do all the fun things that people 20 years younger struggle to do, so I don't feel old. Also.......don't lose your hair, and don't get fat. Both of those make you an old fart. :seasix:

Mom is still alive close to 90.

I work pretty much 7 days a week. I don’t do roofing anymore but I did get up there and check things out during the framing and the shingle install on my new build. I will concede that I really don’t need to get on roofs anymore.

My parents just became officially old. Both are 90 this year and "graduated" this month from their home of 50 years to assisted living. Losing driving privileges is a big sticking point. No fun here of late.
How do you NOT lose your hair?
I did lose mine, but I let my ear hair grow out on one side and use it for a comb-over.
Looks great, women can't tell. :smash:
All genetics. The men on my mom's side all have full heads of hair in the casket. So shall I! I grow hair like crazy. I lose tons of hair in the shower daily, but I grow even more!
To me, "old" is mobility / activity. I know people in their 60's that walk with walkers and have trouble getting into and out of a vehicle. I consider them "old".
And I know people in their 70's and 80's that are active and busy - and are more spry than I am at 47. I do not consider them "old".
"Old" is a sliding scale

Freezing cold weather makes you live longer. You'll probably live to be 125

Definintely not true. One slip on the ice, hip broken, quick downslide.....dead.

To me, once you turn 60 - you are old. Doesn't matter how you feel ... mountain climber or wheelchair ... you are old. Same number of years on the planet. A much larger portion of your life is behind you.
I didn't feel old at 60 at all, nor at 65 - I was still rebuilding classic Corvette suspensions and adding sections to my pier. at 73, different story... I move slower, hurt longer, see worse and often lack enthusiasm. I will also now pay somebody to do things for me that I would have done myself 10 years ago.
I still kayak and bike and am a very physical guy, but, its different.
Circle of life stuff.

Grandfather lived to 101.
Hope I don't.
Mom is still alive close to 90.
Still roofing at almost 60[ this January] and haven't seen a DR. 2 times in almost 40 years.
20 years ago had a physical at 40 by demand of family.
Surprise all good.
Wonder when I will go back?
Probably right before I die.
No meds, no prescriptions in last 40 years.
Good clean air and work.
Old?
Yup oldest guy on the crew almost everyday.
I know several guys over the years who also boasted about not visiting a dr. They dropped dead on the job. One guy in his 50's was pitching softball. Dropped dead on the mound.
I'm no fan of doctors but get an annual physical.

That's me. I can still do a lot of things but I've gotten mentally lazy which makes me physically lazy.
A YOOGE poplar tree fell into the power lines last spring in my woods and I've been thinking of sawing and splitting it up for firewood, mostly just for the exercise. Poplar isn't very good firewood but it's fine for spring and fall heating. Meh, I don't know, maybe I'll just cut up the branches. :(
In the past 1-2 years I've hired a lot of plumbing done, stuff I would have done myself when I was younger.
My farmer buddy (same age, 74) still does a lot of work -- he doesn't have to but he can't stop, lol. He told me a while back he unloaded and stacked 600 hay bales and it nearly killed him. He said he's not doing that again, ha.
He is still butchering beef and I will get some of that after it hangs for 3 weeks. That is hard physical work too.

But you said in the previous post, " . . . don't lose your hair," as if we have some control over it.

Yep. Some cancers can sneak up on you, and all of a sudden they're too far advanced to treat successfully.
Diabetes is even worse. There are usually no symptoms for years and although it is reversible through diet, but if it's started to damage your kidneys, eyesight or vascular system you can be in trouble then.
I forget the number, but more than half of Americans are pre-diabetic but don't know it, and something like 70% of them will go on to develop full diabetes (I was pre- but reversed it through diet).

Ugh....I have a bald spot at the crown of my head and hate it.
I always tell the barber, "I was going to get some corn rows like the Black guys but I have this crop circle!"
Always gets a laugh - I mean, what else ya gonna do ?

Yes, I know. It ****ing sucks. My dad and uncle have male pattern baldness. They both despise it. Both have had rugs over the years.

Yup. Both my cancers were found in their very early stages and while I can't say I'm cured, so far there's been no recurrence
AND... I still have my full head of hair!

Still have a full head. If I was balding I’d buzz it. No way I could wear a rug.

That's the way to go these days - Andre Agassi pioneered it!

Since no one asked me, I can finally tell you that I am 81 and have not worked in the last 30 years; on cfot about 25 years, a long time too. and I don't feel old but since my retirement $ is more than I made when I worked, I simply call the guy for anything that needs to be done. Money well spent. I think like I did when I was 40, and feel like I did then too.
Sure - I've had medical problems but survived them all. Few aches and pains but don't take any pain medication. Testosterone pellets injected into my ass during the last year have made me feel 40 years younger. My wife says if I don't stop chasing her around the house, she will kill me. That's probably the way I will go. :seasix:
