View Full Version : There goes the neighborhood: For the last week, we've had a wayward rooster here

I tried to get a picture, but he's camera shy, apparently. No idea where he came from. Talking with a neighbor, he's mildly upset, because the chicken made a mess of his front flower bed, probably looking for grubs. I kind of like the rooster hanging around our block. I haven't been awakened by crowing, so I'm not seeing a downside to having a free ranging chicken running around.

The rooster met my cat, both under my truck. They just sat there, eyeing each other from opposite sides. The cat did come in when I called her, so I'm guessing Fuzz wasn't interested in tangling with the chicken.

Smart little ***** you have there. My chickens were totally free range and would eat with the cat as they wanted. A few times the cats would try to swat them away and were unable to defend the direct peck to the head withdrawing a tuff of fur.

Most delighted to see Large Robert make an entrance and chime in about a subject that we all know he is an expert in.

I've had friends with chickens and cats and there was always an 'understanding' and never a problem. The chickens had as much personality as the cats, too. A lot of fun to watch.

Update. Soon after the initial thread, we discovered that, in fact the chicken was a hen, not a rooster, when she started laying eggs. She probably laid 7 or 8 eggs, nesting at my next door neighbor's flower bed. I told them to collect the eggs because they would rot in this hot weather, but they didn't.

UPDATE: At least one egg hatched, and now mom is teaching her chick how to chicken. I bought some chicken scratch (feed) for them, and they seem to be enjoying things. Fuzzball doesn't seem interested in either bird, thankfully.

So the question is, HOW did the egg hatch? We've seen no roosters around. Immaculate conception? 2,000 years from now people will be reading texts written by me and my neighbors about the virgin birth of the chick!

:skep:

The eggs are fertilized BEFORE they are laid.

Hens can produce fertile eggs for 2-3 weeks after rooster contact. Possibly even 4 weeks.

So it was a rooster identifying as a hen or a hen identifying as a rooster?

On my way home today, I saw a car pull over and toss a live chicken out the window and drive off.

Did the driver choke it first?

I checked in wondering if Bill's cock was still on the prowl, and now I find out, he doesn't have a cock at all!

Never seen a rooster in the city, BUT if you go to Key West, you will see hundreds, no one messes with them, they are protected.

We recently had a rooster for a couple of months. He tried to attack my wife one too many times, so she gave him a shot of euthanasia solution :sadangel:

The chickens are evolving. :ohnoes:

I hear a metallic clank outside. :ohnoes: Check the porch where the dishes are for the chickens, and sure enough, they're there, looking for breakfast. I fed them. All quiet now.

Yummy fresh eggs!

My neighbors had made a "nest" for them and were providing water, earlier. she had produced about 7 eggs, but they didn't collect them, and I guess one of the 7 hatched. They removed the nest, so I don't know where the chicken and chick are roosting now.

Maybe I'll try and set something up for them and start collecting any new eggs mama bird may lay.

The hen and her chick seem to enjoy roosting probably about 12-15' high up in smaller tree in my front yard. I had no idea they could fly that high.

Winston-Salem "allows" having chickens in city 'hoods. Just hens not roosters. Sexist bastards.

Update: Chickens are still here. So far, no complaints from anyone. I guess if they do and the chickens have to go, I'll set up something like this:

Sad update:

Well, something happened to the mother hen yesterday while I was out. She's gone, and was gone before dark, so I can only suspect it was a hawk. The daughter is still here, she was roosting last night alone in the tree they both roosted close together in.

Damn. I knew that was a possibility.
