So we all have seen and digested the Trump shooting this past weekend, and i've heard a few reports that Trump has reevaluated his outlook on life due to surviving getting shot.

good.

now, while i wasn't shot at, i did spend 5 days in the ICU long ago with a bad heart, likely very near to dying if my wife had not insisted that I go to the ER, and for that i am thankful, as i'm still here.

last week i joined 18 HS kids for their annual church sponsored summer camp trip up to CO. it was very tiring, as i didn't get much sleep, but the kids had a blast, did a bunch of fun activities, and learned some things during evening Bible study time.

this year, i wrote a nice check and sponsored/paid for several kid's costs. other donations also were made, so no kid who wanted to go was denied because they didn't have the $375 cost for the 1/2 week fee.

no point in dying rich, may as well use your money for something useful while you are here.

the camp is off grid, largely runs on solar for power, so no good place to charge your phone. thinking ahead, i brought several battery packs so i could keep mine charged and get pics. i had to lend one pack out so someone could charge theirs, but i think i'm the only one who thought that far ahead. got about 130 pics of kids and scenery. the church may put those on the website later, if so, i'll post a linky.

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

I am glad you are a good person. Very good.
But is part of the game to brag about being good. I see it a lot
in people. They cant do something good without declaring to the world
that you are good. For me it is enough to know that I did good.
Think about it, pray about it.

One of my desktop backgrounds, has this quote with Alex Honnold sitting on a ledge in Yosemite - the Alex Honnold who made the ascent up the sheer face of "El Capitan" without ropes (and lives to tell the tale).

Sometimes it's done to motivate others to follow suit. :yesnod:

There are very few National charities to which I donate.

I donate more now to locals, including the fb soccer/volleyball kids.

Great job DAB. Any young woodworkers in the group?

No idea.

I may host the pastors two daughters in the shop for a simple make and take project later.

9 kids went last year.

Afterwards the pastor said he’d like for more to go this year. So we doubled things.

Some of my best childhood memories are of Boy Scout camping trips in the 60s. I learned how to canoe, pitch a tent, tie knots (that I still use to this day) and how to shoot a rifle (a bolt action .22LR) - your charity will be appreciated long past its immediate benefit.

I'm sorry you didn't get the adult supervision when camping that you should have and it still shines through today.

Hebrews 10:24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:

Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Sharing good deeds done for others is hardly bragging in my book.

Well done, DAB. :cert:

this past spring, we spent some time discussing

Matthew 16:24 ¶ Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

making the point that you should care more about others than yourself. well, if i'm going to sit there and teach this, i better take a stab at living it, lest I be accused of being a hypocrite.

I had an instructor of sorts talk to me about how to define success. Typical answers were some kind of possession goals like a certain size house or cars or money in the bank. After poking holes in that line of thinking, they offered the framing as- you are successful when you are able to help others without hurting yourself.
Now, every dollar handed out does 'hurt' your dollar balance, but somewhere along the way you figure it doesn't hurt all that much. I haven't gotten there but it sounds like a pretty good position to aim toward.

one of the 4 girls i drove to and fro, thought she had lost her wallet, which had some cash $200 or so she said, and her ID. we pack up Wed am and we ask about her wallet. well, she found it, and it had worked to the bottom of her well packed duffle bag. it would take 20 min to unpack and repack it. we don't have that kind of time presently. so i told her i'd take care of her.

we get to our first stop, around 1130am, call her to the back of the truck, and ask her "is this a $10 problem, or a $20 problem?" ummmm.....before she can offer an answer, i open my wallet, pull out a 20 and tell her don't worry about it. get what you want for "lunch".

i'll never miss it.

when she got back in the truck, i told her don't worry about repaying me, don't get sucked into the "pay it forward" mindset, just accept it as a gift. told her the point of having money is so you can help others.

in the same way we cannot possibly "repay" Jesus for saving us from condemnation, we can only give thanks for His unspeakable gift to us.

Awesome stuff DAB!

My younger brother died when he was 17 years old, and was an avid Boy Scout. My family set up a trust in his name, for the benefit of under-privileged kids to go to a week of summer camp, paid for by the trust. For years, my older brother and sister and I ran a charity golf tournament to benefit said trust, until some busy-body liberal stuck their nose on our business, and forced me to exit my involvement with the tournament (I have told the story before, no need to rehash), which within a few years, resulted in the tournament getting shut down.

That was 18 years ago, but somehow, the trust still pays for dozens of kids to go to camp. I can't imagine how that happens.

When people believe in something, taking a "nice to have" away from them will not stop them. :yesnod:
