Yep, the numbers are far exaggerated. The USA, since 1776 had around 850000, which is wrong no matter how you look at it. But, Central, South and the Caribbean had over 14 Million slaves.
But, everyone is a hypocrite. There is still slavery in the World, Africa and ME have the most active slavery programs still in effect.
